One other thing, did they send the right turbo. Im sure they sent me a bigger one by mistake a few years back

Oh ******, I never even thought of that... The turbo 'looks' right but I suppose they could have sent the .82AR Arrrrrrgh the GT2871 and GT3071 look identical in the pics. Is there any sure fire way to check i actually got what i asked for?

Hmmmm youve got me thinking there I wonder, that might make sense!!!

      Many thanks

If your turbo was bigger than specified you would not reach full boost that early.
If you set it at 0.7 bar, and it is reaching 0.7 bar by 3000 rpm, then it's not the turbos fault that you only start getting power at 4200 rpm with the same boost level.

I tried the listening approach once on my old 10v with a home made mic and earphones kit but couldn't really distinguish anything amidst the infernal racket. Do you use something purpose made such as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGJZ6...eature=related . Can you still make out knock at high revs, I notice this advert only give a demo up to 4K rpm which makes me wonder.

The trick is to embed the mic in jb-weld or heat-resistant glue, so that only vibrations are transmitted.
I can hear knock everywhere this way. Low rpm, high rpm, doesn't matter.

Didnt mean to worry you as its probably okay. I only noticed during a rebuild when I measured my compressor wheel. The exducer for the Garrett T04E I ordered is listed as 74mm, mine measures a massive 82mm. Now looking for something less laggy myself.

Hmm, thanks for the tip. I'll see what I can knock up. (Pun intended).

Yeah, if you just put it in the engine bay, it'll be the same as just standing outside the car and trying to listen to it, with wind noise and what not.

Once you only hear the vibration transmitted through the metal, everything will become very clear.

Do you use a standard knock sensor as the mic or would you reccomend an alternative.
