Help; stalling as soon as its started

    My S2 ABY has developed a fault where it keeps stalling. It will start up run for about a second then die down to a stall. If I keep trying it will eventually start and run but any time it left at idle it tends to stall randomly again. As it dies down to stall (from either idle or starting the engine) pressing the accelerator down smothley any amount doesnt move the throttle body smothley as if its being managed by the ecu or something somewhere else? Iv tried vagcom and it came out with;

    1 Fault Found:
    00518 - Throttle Position Sensor (G69)
    27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Could this be the cause of the stalling, or is this as a result of the throttle body jumping around like its haunted? Does anyone have any suggestions what to try or what it might be?

    Thanks.

Have a look at your idle stabilisation valve (ISV) they can stick and cause the symptoms you have described.

Don't poke at it with a screwdriver though, spray some WD40 and try moving the innards with something soft..

    Hope it helps

    Darren.

Hi. Thanks. Would I need to take the ISV off to get wd40 and something within or can it be done in situe after taking the pipes off or any other way?

        ?
You fault code is telling you what is wrong, You have a throttle pot fault, its most likely the pot track is broken or has a broken solder joint inside or the connector to it needs cleaning.
        Try cleaning the connector first.

Can you hear the idle switch click when you shut the throttle ? If the switch is not working or the wire to it is broken the ECU will not engage the ISV.

I had the same fault code when my ISV got stuck.

Hi thanks a bit of wd40 seems to have done the trick, cleared the engine fault and driven about a bit and its not returned or gone strange on me again so far. Hopefully its not just a happy coincidence.

G69 Throttle position switch and N71 ISV information

For future reference, info about these two devices are available by clicking on the G69 and N71 labels in the diagram at this link:

Your engine bay diagram doesn't resemble my engine bay hardly at all, only the big pieces seem to be in the same place. Although mine is a ABY and Avant which may make the differences. I like the position of the fuel filter in this diagram rather than above the fuel tank where it can't be reached in my car.

It is an AAN engine bay. The point is all of the devices that are connected to an AAN ECU are connected to an ABY or ADU ECU so you can use the AAN Engine Bay Device Map to look for info about your ABY engine bay devices connected to your ABY ECU.
                  Just trying to help.

Thanks. It is usefull clicking through and getting pictures of the ISV from a few angles. This should be in the FAQ's potentially.
