I had a spate of blue smoke appearances last year, it would get up to temperature and when when idle in traffic or if the fan cut in it would stutter and almost stall and kick out blue smoke. This carried on for a good 6 months and the oil level kept on dropping every now and again. I had allsorts of theories about this. Since I changed the coilpacks the problem went away
Just thought it worth mentioning. Got any running issues on boost?

PCV for me as the fiurst step.
Take apart the pipes at the side of the engine behind the radiator and soak them in petrol and use pipe cleaing brushes to clear out the build of gunge. Proablay hasn't been done on a lot of cars.
May allievate your smoke issue.
Next step is a compression test.
Somebody might be able to expalin a leak down test, as it might be relevant?
Post the cause in due course.

mines being doing this for ages....after a few people commented I put it down to valve stem oil seals....hence my new engine build...
just make sure your oil level is something you keep your eye on.....
I did change my PCV which didn't really make much of a difference....sorry....

As you can see the first pics are of the flame trap in the pcv , not terrible but not clear either , I have ordered a new one. The one way valve that newsh told me to check out seems to work perfectly restricting one way but opening the other so i guess i can rule that out.
Heres where it gets wierd , this morning before i touched anything and the car was cold I started her up and there was no smoke whatsoever (possibly ruling out valve stem oil seals) i left her running for approx 5 mins and then i started to see the smoke again. at this point i shut her off and removed the pcv parts as pictured.
Later in the day after doing my compression checks I wanted to start the car again it still had the pcv system off, started the first time and almost instantly got the smoke , shut her off , started the car a second time a few moments later - still smoking, i then decided to call it a day untill a friend asked me what I was up to so i invited him to see the bellowing smoke - started the car up and guess what NO SMOKE not a drop! to which i couldnt belive , this start ups and shut downs where all within a 15 min period and the car never reached a good temp as my oil pressure gauge read 5 bar the whole time. ????????? agggggggghhhhhhhhhh

Have you looked in any of the intake hoses to see if there is oil there?Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon
