when the engine is hot the needle sits between the two dots at the top and comes down and back until engine is hot and stays there all the time in heavy traffic or when the fan comes in and on the motorway would it be the sender unit at fault

but before it gets to that temp the goes up and down to nothing like its not working couple of times
and when at temp. does not mater if on motorway or stuck in traffic it stays between the two dots . the fan comes in when stuck in traffic and the needle never moves

You are maybe in trouble if the water temp is running ~120C for long periods.
If the needle is moving up and down a lot then maybe the thermostat is faulty... or the guage itself... or the voltage regulator on the instrument cluster... or the coolant temp sensor under the water rail. Have you checked the coolant level ?
Normal operating temp is 90 degrees and its OK to climb up ~110 in traffic with the higher speed fan coming on and off.Paul Nugent

which one is the sensor the one with four pins as for coolant ive got a leak and even if i dont drive it ive checked the sensor on the rad it only has two pins but the plug has three so i had to swap them around so the fan comes in. even when slitly hot it reads just below 120
