    Adjustable cam information

what with all the recent head and engine builds coming along nicely on the forum I am bowing to the superior knowledge of the forum. I have adjustable cam gears on both inlet and exhaust cam's unfortunately I am at a loss as to what the best settings would be for the optimum performance....and to be honest something "ball park" would be great...

has anyone got any tips/advice/figures for a complete noob when it comes to timing alteration...

i realise it is a trial and error scenario but I need to get somewhere near....

thanks in advance of any help given..

I think set it standard to begin with.
Take measurements with a DTI gauge from a standard head with standard cams in. That will be as close as you need for now. You can tweak it later.

Dialing in cams is a little more complex than just saying one setting is better than another. For starters it would help if we knew which cams you are actually using.

      As a baseline reference though.

Advance intake cam in relation to exhaust cam you will improve midrange spool/torque.

Retard intake in relation to exhaust and you will create more of a naturally aspirated setup with greater overlap.

Advance exhaust cam in relation to crank and you shift the power band lower

Retard exhaust in relation to crank and you shift the power band higher in the rpm range

It can get very complex though as you may find advancing the intake cam by say 5 degrees and retarding the whole combo via the exhaust by two degrees you make a better power curve than just advancing the intake 3 degrees on its own. Short of having good cam iterator software or practical experience you are potentially entering into a world of hurt

^^^ when I refer to the exhaust cam adjustments I'm referring to shifting the cams as a pair/combo retaining the relationship between intake and exhaust.
