new leaky ISV - is this normal?

I recently bought a new ISV from Audi as the old one had a small boost leak around the plastic end cap. I fitted the new ISV and boost tested the car to 1 bar, expecting a good result.

Unfortunately, the new ISV is leaking worse than the old one, again around the plastic end cap. What a waste of cash.

Dmitri has since suggested simply epoxying up the old one as a much cheaper option. I'm starting to wish I had done just that. Doh....

What do people think? Do they all leak from new? Is this normal?

I can easily return this one for a replacement but am I being unrealistic to expect it to not leak?

Yeah, I've seen this thread. I wondered if anyone else has tested new ISV's?

I'd offer to send the old one back but I fitted it to the car just before leaving to the US for a month... not that it helps, but your old one was a huge improvement and finally the car transitions from power to idle much quicker and smoother, and without the 2-300rpm rev blip every time I change gear... when I get back I was planning to epoxy the back.

Not sure why these things wear out, I cleaned mine to try and fix it to no avail. Having a new one probably isn't a bad idea - it should be good for abother 17 years!

I asked the question on my home forum and I got a few responses that indicate any boost above about 20 psi (1.37 Bar) is likely to sneek by the seal in the ISV shaft.

Have a look at the whole thread (scroll down): http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/173744.phtml

So this is a replacement that doesn't leak? bonus it's black

Might go ghetto route as you can get a new IAC for £55

I have found this part number Hella 6NW 009 141-181 when I put 408-202-013-002 from the picture in to the parts search engine.

Are you sure this will fit and has the same electronic characteristics?
I remember trying a BMW ISV on an Audi 2.2T a while back, and I had to completely recalibrate the ISV duty cycle maps in the ECU for it to work. Without doing that, the idle went to high rpm, and then it threw codes for adaptation exceeded.

P/N that I have posted before is from audi 80 2.0 ABK. Does it have the same characteristics with ABY`s one?

                          You tell me

I am just curious, if anyone has actually tried that VDO valve on any of our cars.
And I mean without remapping the ECU for it. Just plug and play?

I can`t try it because my car is without rear wheels

Ha, well... I have only tried fitting some BMW valves and they all needed a remap so far ...
