    Not idling...

No, not me, the car. Late for work this morning, rushed down to car, started... stalled. Again... stalled. Again... would run - idling at 2-400 rpm, then stall.

Came back, snarling, swearing to sell the f*kka and get something sensible, pulled the fuses, started, ran fine, idle normal. Tried 10 minutes later - back to starting and stalling, unless I blipped/held throttle.

The first thought was 'a hose has popped off' but clearing the fault codes should prove that is not so - car ran fine for a couple of mins once cleared.

So - just about to get the fault codes again, but trying to find out where the pages are with all the details - on Paul's S2 site? If so, under what? Anyone got a direct link to the pages/procedure? It's been so long I can't remember quite what to do.

Yesterday the car ran fine. Took it for a blast after warming it up, then trundled home from work, all as normal, sat in traffic fine, got home fine, idled for a minute to let fan shut off, shut car off as normal, all fine.

This morning? Well, I was late for work anyway (woke up at 3am I was on at 3am) so didn't need this!

First time the car has 'let me down' so to speak since rebuild.

Make sure there is not an air leak before the throttle body, that will cause it not to idle...
Was a '93 3B, Dont ask now tho......

        Paul

Codes at s2 central: technical: engine and tuning; motronic ecu: diagnostics

Click on the link to the blink code pages.

2231 is idle control maximum adaptation exceeded. Says it could be a sticking ISV?

It's definitely not idling, or trying very hard to at best - at one point (engine warming up) it was wobbling at 700 - more than previously. Cool down 10 mins, crack up again, starts, stalls.

Anyone have a spare/used idle control valve I can buy/check and return? All the fuses are fine (though fuse 20 had a 10 amp fuse - obviously blown - that was replaced by a 30amp. Maybe radiator will kick in '2 stage' now?) and the car drives, you just need to keep your foot on the throttle which normally wouldn't be a problem except even I slow down sometimes (an exaggeration - I usually average 35mpg on way to work and back).

No leaks from air pipes that I can see. Is there anything else that governs idling until the car warms up? Multi Function temp sensor?

Yep - jackpot Leigh, sounds like you ISV has done what mine did. Just backed up. Expensive to buy and try so can you borrow one of anyone who lives nearby.

This is gonna sound soo Team Bodge, but if you have a mate with an old MK3 Cavalier or similar 2.0 8V they use a very similar ISV, only difference is one pipe is bigger, other than that it fits and works. I have a Cav one on my car!!

              Paul

Try taking it off and cleaning it with some brake cleaning fluid (the aerosol stuff). I'm sure others have done this.

Right - will do. (spraying thingy wotsit with wotserthingy)

                Also...

Bit of a knee jerk reaction, but I went to a SEAT garage today (after taking every boostpipe off the car, checking for splits and putting it all back together again. Again. ). Test driving the 160ps cupra tdi Ibiza tomorrow. I'm agonising over getting a different car, but I have to face facts - if I go for a tdi it's gonna pay for itself in reduced fuel and insurance costs, and the mileage I do - need reliability and low cost, not speed

We'll see what tomorrow brings. Also considering a 330d or 530d (used) but the SEAT looks like getting the nod if I decide to take the plunge.
