    Non starter: Ignition switch?

Just drove the car back from MOT. Stopped twice on the way home, first for petrol and then to save the tax disc from dropping down behind the dash. The first start and that at the petrol station were normal. At the last stop I got out of the car went round to the other side, sorted the tax disc then got back in. All dash lights came on but the key would not turn to the starter position. Bumped her to get home then tried again. Same thing, all the lights in the run position but no starter. The lights stay on and it feels like the key is not turning that last little bit.
Any suggestions? The car is a standard, 1991 S2.
    Thanks

      Switch

Thanks, that is reassuring, I think!

My Haynes (80, 90 and coupe) suggests taking off the steering wheel, popping out the speedo to get access to unbolt the steering lock housing then drop the steering column to get the switch out. Does this seem correct?

Does anyone know the part no. for the switch or who to contact to get it?

      Thanks

I would try the undertray or shelf below the dash, should give you decent access without removing the steering wheel (which incidentally you don't need to do if you have the stand 3 spoke sport steering wheel! )

Not possible to do it with just the drivers tray off Steve. You need to be above it. Clocks out without removing the steering wheel is your choice (which is also easily doable with an airbag wheel too)

Remove lower and upper column shrouds, remove two screws holding in instrument cluster, wiggle it out of dash and disconnect plugs on the rear (pull coloured tabs up on the connectors before pulling them out. You'll now be able to see ignition switch on the back of the barrel.
Get a small flat head jewelers screwdriver and remove the paint Audi applied over the two tiny screws holding the ignition switch to the barrel (why you need to be above it). Undo the two tiny screws (being VERY careful not to drop them down into the mess of wiring) Pull ignition switch out and reverse to put it all back.

Can't remember where I got this picture (maybe google an age back) but it shows why you need to be above. I've done this on my old S2, but never took any pictures.
Tiny grub screws covered in paint by Audi are circled.
It's a fiddle on, especially trying not to drop them once out.

                  New switch

Got the new switch and fitted it, part no are the same. Not sure it's seated correctly or something else is wrong. Feels like the switch and the end of the steering lock are not engaging properly. I've taken a picture with the aid of a mirror of the back side of the steering lock. Can anyone confirm it looks ok or can supply another photo of good one. Is there a trick to fitting the switch correctly?

                  Thanks

                    Steering lock is out

Looks like there should be 2 metal prongs going into the switch from the lock but one has gone. Need a new steering lock!

That white plastic isn't the end of the old ign switch is it? That would explain why the new one wouldn't engage.
It's usually a metal prong into the plastic switch.
Post a pic of the old switch you removed or compare the two.

                        Switch

No, the old switch is complete although cracked around the narrow end of the housing. Should the whole of the hole in the plastic bit be filled by the switch actuating part. It would appear that the little prong which is left is "chewing" the front of the switch.

To me it looks like the centre of the old switch is stuck on the end of the metal rod. I have just changed an A6 one and the switch itself locates directly onto the metal rod.

So does the old ign switch look like this?

                              Switch

Top one is the old one. Same part no. on both.
You can see both now have some damage to the front.

                              Thanks for your interest.
