Must admit I have seen the end of the ign barrel! The only thing that strikes me is that the new one has much larger lugs. Not sure if thats an issue when trying to engage the slot.
Non starter: Ignition switch?

Hmm...
Looking at the pic of the new one the slot is parallel with the lugs whilst the pic of the ign barrel is at 90 degrees! Carefully stick a screwdriver in the top of the new barrel and turn the middle part until it is also at 90 degrees to the lugs, if that makes sense!
On my old one its clockwise.Last edited by twoqu; 16 April 2012, 19:39.Comment

Steering lock
Thanks for the help.
The picture shows both switches in the same position. What you are probably seeing is damage on the far side caused by the worn end of the part of the steering lock, which turns the switch, and the slot that has a corresponding ridge on the plastic bit inside the steering lock. The bit of plastic you first commented on. Both switches still work, even though I've had the old one in bits! (Hey Mods, how come there's no smiley with a spanner?)
This thread has been very useful:
I have a new steering lock and switch in the post and will now need to follow the cylinder removal steps in the above thread.
NOTE: If you carry a spare switch in your car you could use it to overcome this problem by getting to the ignition connector from under the dash and plugging in the spare.
DO NOT forget to unlock the steering!!!
I did this coasting in a car, not mine, with the engine off and suddenly found I locked steering and no brake assist. Lucky I was in a field.

It's a bit clearer now! Looks like you have suffered the same problem. The metal prongs should protrude through that plastic bit, more or less level with that plastic protrusion. It's easier to see from that last link on the 80 replacement.
Actually I was on about the position of that plastic protrusion, the rectangular shaped one. Having looked at that old switch I have, I noticed that it has a rectangular slot in it but the A6 does not have the corresponding male part in the column. The metal prongs go straight into the switch.
Hopefully the used replacement can be used as a donor for the bit you need.Comment
