Has anyone rebuilt a power steering pump?...as I cannot find any info on etka regarding rebuild kits....Can it be done or is it a case of buy a new one....
thanks audi.
If you don't want to do it yourself, get in touch with Phil Payne, he's done 100's and is very reasonable on price. You might want to check that the seal kit is still available from Audi, pretty sure it's NLA I'm sure you can get them direct from ZF though.

Whats up with it Mike?
My observations of the knackered few that I have stripped recently with my PAS obsession have had excessive end float and worn bearings, obviousy a new seal kit won't fix that!

Presumably, it would be possible to shim for the end float and to get some sort of replacement bearing in there while doing the seals?
Has anyone tried it?
I've got one I really want to make 100%

Sorry to bring this old thread back up, but what amount of end float is acceptable on our PAS pumps?
I can rock my pulley back and forth for about one mm, with an obvious click clack.
I've got a pump that seems to get tired after a bit of cornering, falling away and then even not having enough 'power' to assist on standstil... hence my question.
It's a "rebuilt" ebay.de one I bought last year.
My guess is about 0.1mm would be plenty.
If you run out of assistance with quick steering input, like the steering goes hard during a quick S-bend then you have a problem with insufficient fluid flow from the pump.

it could be pump or the rack. There is not enough volume of fluid passing through the rotary valve in the rack. Either the pump isn't producing enough, or the rack is loosing it through its seals. My money would be on the pump.
You can strip the pump and check that the vanes are not worn out and what the clearance is between the vanes and the back-plate - I don't have a spec on that but it should be tight. You can also check that the flow control valve is not sticking, although i think that is highly unlikely.
Have you checked the belt tension BTW? Slipping bet could easily cause this

The belt-tension is correct. It's exactly that losing of assistance combined with a grinding noise that i get at quick changes and lots of cornering.
It was a recon'd ebay pump however... might be failing again then. Any way to check the rack for leaking seals?
Okay. Bit hard to guess. The pump doesn't make any strange noises, but the assistance that's falling away must come from somewhere
I also noticed that at a standstill it mostly goes well lock to lock, but the last half turn either side loses assistance ... strange
