Setting The Record Straight With Custom Mapping And Homefries

    Hi all,

I'm posting this here, mainly because I have started to hear bad echoes about things that I have nothing to do with.

I have heard that several people weren't happy with their ABY homefries, and that they are going to get somebody else (not me!) to map their cars,
hopefully in order to get them running right.

I would like to state publicly, once and for all, that I don't have any affiliation (other than knowing Paul and having helped him with chips development ages ago) with Paul's ABY homefries.

Paul is indeed selling my 3B and ADU generic chipsets, which have been tested by myself in several otherwise stock cars that were in good shape (that I have custom tuned afterwards for even better results),
however, when it comes to the ABY homefries, Paul is the only one who knows exactly what they contain.

I do not like to do generic chips and all this has started a long time ago, when I mainly had no clue what custom tuning was, now I only do custom tuning and what you can read on my website about the way I tune cars applies for ALL CARS, not just a few lucky people.

Real tuning on any car should always be done while checking EGTs/air-fuel mixture and everyone should ensure a car is in good working order with absolutely no boost leaks prior to any tuning. There are lots of ongoing problems on Avants where fuel filters/fuel pumps fail (I have pulled my hairs on this myself, on the first Avant that I've mapped, Lee's) and the cars will run lean because of this. Running lean first off makes an engine run like cr@p and will lead in short time to much worse problems like burnt exhaust valves, melted turbines and eventually melted pistons if these problems aren't addressed in a timely manner.

Thus, I would like you guys not to think that if you're not happy with your ABY chips, I am the one to be blamed, simply because I don't know what you guys are running. If however you have one of my 3B/ADU chipsets and
aren't happy with them, please let me know so we can get this sorted out. I hope Paul will sort out going issues with the ABY chipsets and that people won't simply go and see somebody else when it's not somebody else's job to fix these problems.

    Thanks for reading,

I have to say that I have been extremely chuffed with my custom remap by Mihnea. I will never forget the night where he spent 11 hours in my car trying to get things to run right. We tried absolutely everything and found the fuel filter at fault after swapping almost everything out..would you believe it, a non servicable item was shafted! No complaints from here on the custom stuff - 20k miles of spanking without issue.

Yeah trying to get some cars mapped properly is a right nightmare. It takes ages to find the reason why a car wont run rich at WOT, and this attacks my drinking time at these tuning sessions/meets.

        What ABY problems???????

Don't think you'lll hear any complaints from me or most of the people with 3rd gen chips from Billing they are cracking IMHO.

Maybe should have an independant thread with a vote on it so see if ABY customers are happy with Homefry chips.

Jamo, I've made this post because I've heard rumors of people being unhappy with them. I don't know who, nor do I actually want to know who, I just wanted to put things right here so people don't think my work is to be blamed.

I think every mapping sesh there has been a problem with a fuel pump/filter - it's not just our cars - my mates 1.8T is a prime example - it was runnig super lean - it still ran well - produced the power - but it only overheated the coolant on track - all because of the fuel pump.

I don't think generic is possible on cars of our age - IMHO - too many variables just due to age.

And the after Service from Mihnea has been faultless on my car - If people think his tuning is bad - just see how much work he puts inot every car he maps - and he won't finish till he and you are happy.

That fuel filter can be a real PITA, it should be changed before any mapping is done IMHO, I know its easier on the 'superior' Coupe than it is on the Avant but it is worth it, along with the pump too.

It must be done regardless of the Audi service intervals. Blocked filters must be giving the pumps a harder time too on standard let alone with incerased flow demands.

Avant filter changing is impossible!! Need to drop the tank unless you bodge it like I did...works a treat polus I now have a bigger filter.

Not aimed at you directly. Just wondered if you knew what the EGT's were getting upto on the car or any others? Would be nice to know thats all.

Disagree... The underlying premise is that the engine be healthy in respect to mechanical condition (compression etc) , the ignition system, have no air leaks, and have a good fuel system. The tiny differences in those parameters on healthy cars will make no difference to operation of any chip upgrade.

Unfortunately, there are some people who think a chip upgrade is like a magic wand that will miraculously fix any problems on the car, make it go better and use less fuel. Life ain't that simple.

Oh and if anyone is unhappy with ABY homefries then I want to know about it directly... Not by this 2nd hand nature of rumours...

Of course there are some people still running on older versions of chips which aren't as 'generic' as the current ones - I know who you are - but I'm not hearing any complaints.

I'll check my history and see how many old sets are out there - and once again offer free upgrades to anyone that wants them.

Don't go blaming chips for engine problems either... and if you are in any doubt about it - buy some decent instrumentation for boost, EGT and fuel mixture.

That is what I mean - Not many cars 10 to 14 years old are healthy/as new condition and all these things mentioned above have to be checked before a chip upgrade.

This is just my opinion from the few times I have been to mapping sessions and my friends experiences with his engine that has only done 20k miles and had fueling problems at high rpm/high boost.

Paul, I have one of the older chips (gen2 I think) - and I have no complaints at all. Works very well for me. The only question I have is, is it worth me upgrading to the latest version? Will it make much difference?
