Hard to tell from the pics but the wear looks pretty normal to me.

The engine actually nipped up so more damage to the crank I think, still started after for a few seconds but obviously shut it down straight away.

The lobes look like normal wear and tear with no hot spots. However this is not the area that gets damaged when it runs dry. It is always the cam journal and camcaps that take the punishment, so until they are removed from the head you can't tell.

You can however depending on the level of damage repolish and re use.

One thing you definately want to do is remove the plastic splash shield these get brittle with age, break up and block the oil pick up pipe.

Pull the caps and look for scoring/galling/heat colouration.

And bin it or replace? Is it needed?

I like an answer to that one as well if you catch this thread JP?

I do know the 3B splash guard is stronger than the ABY item as I picked up a second hand ABY splash guard that I 'was' going to use over the the exhaust cam under the extra breather I've added to the front of the cam cover. However upon inspection I binned the ABY one as it was riddled with hair line cracks and about to start disintegrating. My old 3B one looks fine and is made of thicker plastic.

Think I'll price up a couple of new 3B one's to be on the safe side, I want one under the breather to stop excessive amounts of oil passing into the system.

On an ABY i say bin it, makes filling with oil a real pain in the ****. Also seen them disintegrate as they get old and brittle.

My 7A never had one and the only down side i can see is a slow oil seep from the cap. If you remove it when running the cams spit oil out all over the place.

Bin them and run a fresh oil filler cap to stop leakage. It's only there to stop oil splashing out the oil filler cap when the engine is running it serves no other function. And in all honesty anyone that thinks they feel the need to remove the oil filler cap of a running engine deserves to get splashed with oil.
