First DIY job and I f$%k it up

I took the rocker cover off last week for jet hot coating and put it all back together yesterday. Very pleased with myself. Reconnected battery, and she started first time A load of mechanics were stood around me saying what a good job for a non-mechanic, when oil started pouring out all over the workshop floor. I turned the engine off and managed to find what was wrong........I'd not replaced the half circle rubber grommett / blanking plate at the front of the rocker cover. It was hidden from view behind the timing belt cover. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it So I basically have had it towed to my local VW/Audi garage to replace the timing belt as I haven't got the tools or the know-how or the money to stuff that up So I went home last night, closed all the windows, and turned on the gas Oh well, I'll keep trying

Happens to everybody one way or another. I forgot to use blue Loctite on 3 bolts when doing my timing belts - the 3 bolts that protrude into the oil galley.

The main thing is not to give up. It is too much fun wrenching on our cars. I have gotten to the point where I change stuff that is not broken just to have an excuse to bruise some knuckles

Oh joy - Just what I want to hear before I attempt mine tomorrow.

So what is that grommet ? Is it the half moon shaped plugs which come with the gasket set - I thought these were both at the back of the head though ?

Pete me and my mate did it in an hour using http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articl...ver_gasket.htm

Main thing to watch out for there is two places that the gromment can go in at the back, make sure you put it in the outer one! and the other one goes at the front behind cam cover.

Can you see where i mean on the right theres 2 holes for the half moon's and it needs to go in the outer one to make a complete seal?

Karl must be talking about a different grommet/blanking plug though as his was at the front of the head

Can you see it in this pic Karl ?

                      Thanks guys
I'm confused as to what is supposed to fill the half moon hole behind the timing belt cover at the front of the engine as the links only seem to refer to the ones at the rear (which I did) I can't really see it from the photo Pete_RS2 either mate.
                      Any other views possible ?

The front half moon seal is actually part of/integral with the black rubber main gasket the only seperate half moons are on the back (bulkhead) end of the head and are usually whitish in colour.

                            Ahhh
Which probably means that I pinched the gasket on the way back on. Crystal clear now that I am an idiot. Thanks guys. I'll have a look.

I changed mine today. Took about an hour & a half. I was extra careful locating the front 'half moon' area.
