I'm having a few problems with VCDS, it can connect to a few controllers like ABS etc but not the engine ECU. it comes up with "too many communication errors to continue" and looks like this
ideas anyone? i've tried changing com ports etc but no luck.
I would try the "turn It off then back on again" approach, I.e. Pull the ecu or fuse for it and see if it makes a difference. Not very technical but might be worth a shot.
The cheap Chinese copies often suffer from this problem. I'm sure I've read somewhere that if you reduce the baud rate it can impvove the communication issue. I can't find the instructions on what the best settings are though...sorry!

You can't "reduce baud rate". The ECU communicates at 9600 baud. Send at any other baud rate and you will not get anywhere at all...
Well of course you can try 187500 on the secret Bosch protocol, but VAG-COM can't do that.
It's either a dodgy cable or a dodgy ECU.
Only one way to find out
