If is is like the AAN, ABY or ADU, it will be stamped on one of the heads.

Just checked my C4 Bentley manual(s) (AAN and V6 only, NAmerican). For the V6 it says "engine number is stamped on the right side of the engine block just below the cylinder head. Remove the engine cover for access".

The "photo" shows the number (AAH 000nnn) on the block, by the cam belt cover.

So, Have some problems with my car and the police. Of course i know i have a ABY engine but when i look at the side off my clinder head there aren't any numbers/engine code stempt in. Is it common to find no numbers on the side of the head? The head on my car is a 7A head. My spare 7A head also has no number.

They might have been machined off. However, I will tell you that the factory OE replacement AAN heads (and therefore probably the ABY and ADU heads) have NO numbers stamped into them. So as far as the police are concerned, you could just have a replacement head. AFAIK, that is not against the law.

The other location of the engine number was on the cam belt cover. With the engine number and the VIN (from the build tag or stamped on the cowl) it is possible to match the month/week of the two builds to see if the engine appears to be original to the vehicle.

Thanks for the fast replay! If they make a problem of it i will tell its probably a replaced head. I all ready know about the cam belt cover but mine is damaged. Can only read the engine code.

So there is no code or number in the engine block itself?

Too bad. Yeh, all I see there is "ABY", but no number.

There might be a SN stamped into the block as per the diagram below. However, I have never been able to find a number in that location. Even if you find a number, there is no corresponding number listed on the build tag. At best you can match the build date of the engine at about a week before the build date of the vehicle (seems to be the time gap, based on the build tags that I have decoded and matched against engine numbers).

Yes. The 7A engine number is stamped on the block.

I have an ABY block with a 7A head, so no engine number.

Went to the authorities to show them my car. They only looked to the stickers on the cam-belt cover so i had no problems with the engine code

That's all they should be worried about anyway.
