Help needed, S2 ABY died under Idle, won't start

Driving 5km after I picked it up from wheel alignment, then it died under idle. No bad sounds, almost started 5-10 times, but dies.

Starter turns, but no start, just some coughs in the beginning, now nothiong (like no fuel)

Tank is full, has been opened, so not a vacuum problem.

I let it cool down for 45 mins and tried again, no change.

I had the oppertunity to fit the usual TFSI coil conversion (old system with POS' mounted when the error occured. No luck.

    The usual suspects :
    • ignition lock (but no heavy keys hanging from it, and no variation even during several trys with key out/key in).
    • Fuel pump (havent heard any bad noises from it)
    • Fuel pump relay
    • Immobiliser - haven't got one.

I have had the car for a year, never had any issues like this.

Latest work on the car :
    • alignment today
    • new suspension, this month
    • new rear discs and pads, this month
    • "Bambridge" steering adjusters and bushings in the steering arms(?) this month. No visible interference between arms and cables.
    • Oil/filter change this month
    • Other MAF for about 100kms without issues.
    • exhaust welding - new Simons silencer since about 1500kms

No readout or fuel delivery test yet, I'll be towing it home tonight with my VW Polo. Talk about disgrace.

Any temperature sensors, or maybe the cam position sensor that can cause this?

All ideas are more than welcome!
    Cheers, Torben

well before few days my friend have same problem.
the teeth in cam pulley was broken, and engine won't start.
remember if aan,aby,3b... lalal don't want to start the problem could be:

    hall sensor
    crankshaft sensor (pin on flywheel)
    fuel pump
broken teeth on cam or crankshaft pulley.

in every other case engine will start

RS200 gave you the correct list of the usual suspects. I would add the fuse for the coils (wire insulation breaks off under the 20V Turbo coil cover and shorts out the coils). Check the fuse. In a C4 S4 it is a yellow fuse holder above the ECU. Not sure about a B4 S2.

Next up is the fuel pump. Check out the link below and modify as necessary for an ABY S2 re: bypassing the fuel pump relay by supplying power to the downstream side of the fuel pump fuse (I don't know the fuse number in an S2).

Then there is cam position sensor. Lots of info here (click on the G40 cam sensor lable bottom middle (all the other labels are live links as well - for future reference):

Thanks, both of you, this forum gives me the courage to keep the S2, theres always help to find when something acts up. Now, wheres the "donations" button?

I'll have a look at the problem tomorrow.

          of course my friend..
there is a lot of things which will stop you to start the car. some of them are mehanical, other one is electrical parts. if something go wrong first you will check the fuse box. if problem isn't there, than step further.
tscheel you must check EVERYTHING. (almost everithing)

Spot on! I have over-read this forum I think. It was a blown fuel pump fuse Note to self: Check the obvious reasons first. (I thought I checked the relevant fuses, but not that one, apparently).

Well, the bonus was that I made a readout - no errors (apart from "no speed signal"), cleaned out the leaves behind the fuse box, checked the fuel relay and had a look at the fuel pump basket top.

            Thanks again

              Good news/bad news.

Good news = you found your immediate problem

Bad news = you've only solved the symptom of the real problem. The fuel pump fuse failed for a reason. Unless you find and correct this reason, i.e. a short in the wiring or shorting pump, etc., the new fuse will also fail.

              Good luck

You're right. Fuel pump have stopped delivering fuel, even now when the current gets to the pump.

A used pump on the way from a helpful forum member

Any tips on exhanging pumps in a full tank are welcome
