    can't get oil filter off

I spent at least an hour to get my oil filter off, but it won't move a degree. I did manage get a hole in the side, preventing me to run the car until this is solved.

    I used this tool:

which worked fine before, but has met its match now. previous oil change was done at a workshop (first and last time I had that done), they also managed to tighten the plug so hard I had to resort to leg power to get it loose.

anyone with good tips that will work in the restrickted workspace we call an S2?

Hammer a screwdriver right through it then lever it off.

^^ with a 4" extension on your ratchet and you'll have it off in seconds.

If it is holed already, then just drive a sodding great screwdriver through the middle of it and wind it off using that... Messy, but it sounds like its a little bit late for finesse...

I thought of the screwdriver, but hardly any space around the bl***y thing to get a decent sized one in... but if nothing bette comes along, I'll resort to the proper kind of violence

I'll try to find the chain type thing, that looks like it might work (since the chain can be on the top of the filter)

oddly, i find these slip less than chains

and i have never ever seen one of these not get a filter off or get into a location where it cant be used! (but a moron in one of my centres has ****ing broke it and said nowt, need to buy a new one! dunno how they broke it though?!?!?!?! muppets)
as you turn it to loosen, it tightens grip!

if you dont want put screwdriver through ? get another person to use a flat screwdriver and a hammer to shock the crimped rim at top of filter as you apply pressure with what ever tool you have. might sound silly but it not really FORCE but a steady application of pressure. its a rubber seal not a nut and bolt. this way has never failed me.

I have always had the most success with the tools that have a cloth strap instead of a chain, they have a much better grip on the filter. But every now and again it will end up crushing it instead of unscrewing it. The best tools are the one that fits onto the end of the filter and have a 3/4" drive on them, they rarely slip or deform the filter.

A 'wolfshead' tool is the correct one for VAG. They're cheap enough and allow a torque wrench to be used for tightening. Unlikely to help in this situation but get one to complete the job correctly

                    http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=375&item=1090 I think.

I have the tool Rusty showed in his link. I've tried all types over the years and this is the best one, and well worth getting regardless of price.

No mess and good access with the ability to excerpt pressure from a ratchet or breaker bar for less effort.

The reason the filter is tight might be that the garage never smeared a wipe of oil on the rubber seal before putting on.

                      Best wishes.

I got the tool Rusty recommended now, its pretty good. Have used the screwdriver method, it can rip through it if its really tight though.

Have also used these to great effect

Another approach is to look through the service history and take it back to the business who fitted said oil filter, then explain the issue, and the inherent incompetence for over torquing the filter.... This is best explained to them when you suggest that their actions are not only an inconvenience but also prevent the environmental reclamation.

This is a particularly boring document

they may like to proffer and consider their reprehensible behaviour toward this EU document by over torquing the oil filter....

I'm sure, that, by showing you compassion, By, say, providing you with a suitable compensation, you are less likely to advise of their non-compliance....
