I like the crinkle coat and the silver ribs.

The cover has been modified to accept the coils. Hamish did it for me, fast turnaround too The rubber boots have been removed and the two little plastic tabs that sit under the rubber.

Where's best to get the coils from? Mike has sent me the link for the US place but they're pricey for a single set...

Dimitri, do you have to live map these or do you have suitably adjusted software?

No, I don't have to live map these.
I can go as far as receiving your existing binary, modding it and sending it back.

Or I can do a chipset.

Dwell time is not rocket science, you just need to set it to about 2.0ms for these coils.
Stock is 4.5ms, manufacturer max spec is 2.5ms.

Just looking at extruded heat sinks as a possible idea to more effectively cool the coils and hold them in place at the same time.

Not sure what Mike's link was but the one I had given him has the red V8 115E coils for US$16 plus shipping, at least in North America.

It's the $65 postage and import tax that mean it's worth shopping.around

You're looking at around 100 GBP's for a set of 5 if you get lucky with customs.

Also, with the new taller FSI coils (14mm taller than original 1.8T ones), the 7A cover can be mod'd in a way as to retain the original sealing rubber on the coil packs as well. BTDT. Keeps dust and debris from getting down in the plug holes, which is important here in the desert.

Do you by any chance have a part no. for the tall ones? Ta

The ones shown above (and referenced in this particular thread) are the taller ones.

I only bring it up because there's been discussion about modifying the 7A cover for coil packs. The mods to use the 1.8T coils are different as the plug will interfere with the valve cover, and the 2.0T coils sit higher thus eliminating the need for that feature.

Some of the required mods mentioned elsewhere in that thread are because the shorter 1.8T coils were being used.

Leaving the rubber on per OEM also retains them as originally designed, so they are nice and snug.

You can clearly see SteveH's coils and mine sit higher from the valve cover deck than Hamish's.
