I've double checked and that's what it says.
If you cross reference the part number it's used on loads of different cars, 4,5 and 6 cylinder both 2wd and 4wd, so

You thought that I didn't cross reference the PN?
I tried again. Still comes up unique to 1996 A6 (fwd).
However, when I put in the proper 1994 ACOQ ABY release bearing PN, 012141165E, it crosses all over the place.
Upon further investigation, 01E141165B was dropped on 01/04/2000 with 01E141165, as the replacement.
Upon even further investigation, 01E141165, was dropped on 01/04/2002 in favour of....

I've heard that some companies, cough034cough, were just removing the plastic piece, leaving the steel face, and selling it as a 'better' part. Can't say if this is true or not, or if there is actually 'value added' in the removal. I've not examined them too much, and never had a problem with the plastic one in my lower power builds.Comment

called about one of these today, clutch change is due.
They gave me 0B1 141 165
Said thats a very common bearing scross the range. I wonder how can one bearing supercede about 6 different unique types and still fit properly?Volcano ABY coupe

I am guessing 0B1141165 has superceded even the one (012141165E) that I found has superceded the others. Note the commonality of "141165" in all the PNs that were discussed in this thread. In this case, the release bearing is not a precise fitting bearing. It just needs to have an opening large enough (plus a bit) to slip OVER the transmission input shaft and have a fixed bit that can be attached to the clutch operating lever and a rotating bit (hence the "bearing" part of the description) that sits out from the fixed bit and contacts the rotating clutch fingers (at up to 7200 RPM!!) helping to push them in to release the pressure from the clutch plate on the clutch disk. In the interests of part economy, Audi (and VW) don't need to have a different unique part for every vehicle in their lines. One part is designed to work across many models.
