well ive found my leak, same as paradynes problem, on the way to work and coolant level warning goes off so stop at next garage, having a poke around and gave pipe coming from pump a wiggle, only for it to shear off completely:mad:
must have been cracked since my recent engine work.
anyway watched as all my lovely new g12 enptied all over tescos forcourt
got round it by pulling snapped part of pump halfway out of hose and joined other hose from pump onto it, it'll get me home in the morning anyway, luckily i have a spare pump at home,
thought i was stranded till i remembered about the reversible screwdriver in the 'toolkit' in the boot, what a saviour

I've also been suffering from an inoperative after-run pump (=TCP) on my ABY-engined -94 Avant with ECC. Did some troubleshooting yesterday and isolated the fault to the TCP thermoswitch.

Here are some quotes from s2central and my comments on them:

Best guess on the part number for the after-run relay is 447 965 571A - to be confirmed.

On my car the relay had exactly that part number.

Relays J26, J101 and J138 all appear to be in same location as 3B, but J155 may not be.

True, relay J155 (after-run relay) was located in position 14 (not 12) of the aux. relay carrier under the dash. Location 12 was occupied by the headlight/radio buzzer.

I guess I'll have to get myself a new thermoswitch. I have some unconfirmed information about a thermoswitch originally installed in Seats (that's the car, not what you sit on ) that should also fit the s2. This sensor is made by the spanish company FAE (part nr. FAE-3547). This switch should close and open at slightly lower temperatures than the s2 one:

      FAE: close 105 deg. C, open 95 deg. C

      Original S2: close 110 deg. C, open 97 deg. C

Both have a max. temp of 130 deg. C.

But this is only something I read on another forum and I have no personal experience regarding either of these sensors.

Sorry Martin I haven't... if a part number could be put to it from that forum, Seat use similar numbers to VW Audi, then I could check it...

            Martynf:

Couldn't get the Seat part nr, sorry about that. One guy had ordered it from a spare part supplier here in Finland using that FAE part nr, so they should be readily available if one only knew where to ask for it. I'm however not sure if its worth the extra hassle over getting the standard S2 item. Might be better to use the standard part...

              Markus,

well I've looked, and there are four types of after run switches fitted to the Seat's. They all only have ONE pin though, the lowest temperature I could find was 100 deg C which seems to fit your 95-105 range. I'd be reluctant to change to one of these though... in this case I personally think it's safer to stick with the right OE Audi one.

                  Let's continue this old thread.

The relay in 3B cars is in the in-dash relay plate. It's in position 12. It's usually a double height unit, brown in colour.

I have the above mentioned FAE thermo switch. Dunno if it is a Seat part as IIRC the parts catalogue gave Golf II and Corrado models for that switch. I also can not tell if the lower temperature rating is better or not as my old switch was totally dead.

Can someone tell me where abouts the pump is located in the ABY engine bay?

I'm not 100% sure that mine's working and would like to check it.

Its between the engine and the rad, pretty low down.
just follow the pipe from the top of the rad (rear side), it splits in two, the smaller pipe connects to it.
the pump should run for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on so you should be able to see if it works.

                        Thanks Martin.

I can certainly hear the 'moo' of a very small cow for a few seconds when turning the key, but how long is the delay after turning off the engine for the fan to kick in?

I waited for a few minutes but never heard anything. Definitely warm enough too.

Mine comes on almost straight after keying off. 10 seconds max.

It's definitely working on turning the ignition key, but nothing after stopping the engine.

                              D'oh.

Your engine need to be very extremely *ing hot to get the after cooling sequence to start with the factory temp switch as it's 110C and you need to wait for 5-10mins to let the heat transfer from the head to the coolant etc.

I'm running the FAE 105C(?) one that kicks in a bit easier. Try forum search about the subject.
