    Precision turbochargers failing

Not started as a PTE-bashing thread, just as general info.

It seems that turbine failures on PTE items are becoming very common especially by the guys that really push 'em.
That does not sound strange after finding out that PTE uses journal bearing turbine rotors and modifying them to be used in their redesigned ball bearing applications.

As stated by Justin Ocello, Senior manager of Garrett's performance division they stopped delivering to PTE as a partner/ part reseller:

PTE was modifying the Garrett shaft at the compressor end to fit his product design. Also, I must remind everyone that this turbine wheel assembly was designed for use in a journal bearing application. If it is to be used in a ball bearing application, the shaft would have to be machined to accommodate the different bearing design/layout. That means that the finished shaft was being modified in some way to fit into PTE’s ball bearing turbo. I don’t think I need to explain how tight the tolerances are on these parts and how difficult it would be to keep uniformity while re-machining a shaft.
Entire statement can be read here:http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/sh...28&postcount=1

Anyone had any bad experience with PTE Aftersales? They don't seem to stock parts nor be very helpfull in case of failures under warranty.

gotta say never had an issue with my turbo.

i presume we are talking items starting with pte on the code.

mines an old sc61. ran for a few years beforwe the car got written off. not even a sign of isues/wear on seals etc.

for whoever had the issues it cant be good though. id expect all the good that precision has done can be destroyed by a few issues. especially with the internet.

I have 4 (four) Precision turbos failing after only hours of use. Some were covered by warranty, some were not. The last one failing will be sent over to them asap.. they use 2-3month to wether its covered or not. I will go over to a different brand, as I`m getting sick of changing turbo every trackday..
For me they usually snap off turbine blades resulting in unbalance. The first one snapped the axle resulting in several liters of oil and turbo pieces in borth mufflers and intercooler.

Thinking about maybe trying Borg Warner.. they are said to be pretty solid. Holset.. isnt that old truck turbos mainly used by cheap swedish tuners?

PPF used to sell Borg Warner. They later started selling Precision and then stopped selling Borg Warner. If i remember right more than 10% of Borg Warner turbos broke. Presision isnt even near 2%.. This is just from my head, cant find the thread on PPF forum...

                      Found the thread:
"I just talked to Precision about it. It seems that they got a bad batch of turbine wheels from Garrett and any promod turbo invoiced from 9/16/11 until early October is in question. Precision is beginning to manufacture their own turbine wheels and shafts now so that they will not have any more issues.

Harry (owner of PTE) has made it publicly known that we will take care of any turbos that maybe under suspiscion on PTE's dime."

                      Who knows..

How come the Garretts with same unmodified parts do not fail? PTE would immediately try to claim Garrett for selling bad quality items if that was the case.

                        Justin Ocello:
To this day, we have yet to receive any hardware from PTE directly for our evaluation. In addition, we have yet to see any returned turbos or CHRAs from our OE customers or our aftermarket customers that have failed turbine wheel assemblies
I heard they are now using Chinese turbine rotors from Turbonetics factories.

Blades breaking from the hub is most likely due to high cycle fatique caused by resonance, and altering a (most likely) tribology tested part will lead to this.
That's a good thing about using for instance Garrett TR's or Holset turbine rotors coming from heavy duty applications, these have passed extended tribology testing pushing natural frequencies out of the prominent resonance range.

I have heard some noises in the scene trying to use PTE's on restricted higher compression projects killing the turbines during mapping sessions, only lasting hours... But apparantly it does happen to more clients, warranty being such a hassle that people move away.

Let me tell you, a truck unit is far more reliable compared to our fun stuff for the weekends. Us ordinairy customers validate their robustness before putting it up the market. Your road car is child's play in reliability terms of usage.

I`m fully aware of that, I just want the best turbo with regards to reliability and performance. My guess is that truck turbos is built to last, but in a 2,2ltr it wouldnt do much good as it is way to heavy in rotation mass.

What is the best turbo for a 650-700hp 2,2ltr, except comp turbos and precision.? Regardless of cost? Must have v-band flange in/out on the exhaust housing
