Hey dude, Just go for it or you'll spend millions on replacing everything down to the last molecule. These machines are hard as nails.
On a different note, a20vaa has just had its 200 thousand mile birthday, got it new suspension and did the top end - It still passes the emisions test no bother.

Once you start building an engine it adds up quick, though you can build a bomproof engine for the next 200k.
this is what i was thinking

its an AAN head i found out,not that it makes and difference.

i hear what everyone is saying about checking it thoroughly etc but i have been looking at it today and it is in such good condition, cambelt recently done lovely clean water/coolant.
spent most of its life unchipped etc

I recon you should check the mains/big ends if you have the chance. A compression/leakdown test will tell you enough about the top end and if anything is going to go on a 200K engine it will be the shells from what I've seen. With the extra load it may start to knock before anything goes, giving you chance to get it sorted before it's a total failure.

As long as its tuned properly you will avoid anything catastrophic.
Not sure if you can fit new big end shells on these by just dropping the sump but if so thats a fairly easy option for extra piece of mind

Dropping the sump to clean it and the oil pick up out fully, as a minimum, as it is a doddle when the engine is out of the car.

IMO its all down to the condition of the bottom end, is the compression and oil pressure good etc. If its healthy i dont see an issue.

Sure if there is a catastrophic failure, but very rarely is that caused by age. If something is going to go wring with an engine its normally early in its life. At 200k its not so much of a quick tidy up more like a complete overhaul. If you are planning to rebuild it properly I can almost guarantee you will need to re-bore and put new pistons in due to oval bores, so there is the best part of £1k before you even start thinking about anything else.

Personally Andy, I'd just run it. The worst that will happen is you find you need to rebuild it, which is your other option anyway! Its not like its a daily driver.. I think you'll soon see if anything is showing its age
Isn't the worst that could happen the fact that he could be looking at a new turbo, block or pistons if there is a considerable failure rather than just (potentially) some new piston rings, shells and a cleanup if he takes preventative action?
