Yeah....I think it's a good idea to have it done, but honestly, I didn't really spend that much on my turbo, so if it grenades, I'll just buy a better one. I don't drive an audi anyways, I just came here at the advice of somebody else on vwvortex, I have a Golf with Syncro drivetrain, I needed the manifold and all that from the 5000 so it's still a good deal even if it doesn't last too long.

If the turbo grenades because of being out of balance, it'll snap the shaft. Snapping the shaft means plenty of compressor bits inside the cylinders. Yes, they DO go through the intercooler if it happens.

do you not think we are a bit paranoid about turbos. Take Ski's turbo 180k still producing boost, how straight will his shaft be, how many million times has it been heated up than cooled down, no way it will be even close to being balanced.

Maybe its me then, im just one of those ppl that like to do jobs in the correct way. You can save yourself some money and do the rebuild yourself, but hey, if it works well for you then do it. Let us know how you get on with it tho. If it is possible by us mere mortals then i would like to know how.

I balanced high speed rotors when I worked the space industry (Flywheels for spacecraft attitude control actuators). We only went up to a maximum of 18,000 rpm with our small 100g rotors but on the balancing equipment we used you could mark an index line with felt tip and watch the readings change as the solvent in the ink evaporated.

It is not true that you must balance a turbo at anywhere close to full operating speed if you have accurate equipment...that is just marketing hype. It only needs to be spun at a few thousand RPM if the trasnducers in the balancing rig are accurate enough.

The firm I used for balancing subcontracting is one of the worlds larget manufacturer of balancing machines and even supply the fully automated machines used in car production lines to balance things like alternators and other rotating devices. When balancing a 600,000 rpm rotor from a dentist drill they use lasers to fire of minute particles of material from the 5mm diameter impeller at full speed!!!! Fantastic stuff.

I would never rebuild a turbo without proper balancing. Thats crazy. I could probably get a balancing machine refurbished/updated by the original manufacturer but you are still looking at around £15k. Plus, Santa's sack wouldn't be big enough anyway and the chimney is too small. LOL.

The turbo now makes an audible whine which it never used to do...

Dont forget the turbo seals are not designed to take pressure this way as in normal operation there will be a slight vacume against the seal, never pressure. So by presurising the MAF pipe, you are giving this seal which is designed to keep oil in and not air out, air pressure so it can open the seal.

Have to admit my old K26/27 did that with only 10000miles on it. And that had no problems in terms of power or smoke

Aye - I know that. Its a l;ightly unfair test on an old-ish turbo... Its the slight whistle that concerns more...

Is a seriously reconditioned turbo as good/durable etc as a factory fresh one? Stupid question I know. But I don't know.

If it's done properly by a person/company who really knows what they are doing then yes

Both Turbo Technics and Turbo Dynamics do a "turbo service" - seals, bearings, etc, plus full balance, for somewhere I believe in the region of £200. You've got to get the turbo to them for this, so add some for postage and some (more) non-running time.

                          NCT either company.

Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

I wouldn't use Turbo Technics for a KKK turbo, i'd use AET or Turbo Dynamics

Yup my K24 is making some noise now on spooling up, especially when in say 4th or 5th and you build up speed gradually almost sounds like it could be rubbing somewhere. I think I'll speak to AET rather than try anything myself
