While doing a compression test on my s2 avant's engine before it gets its head off, I got 2 cylinders into the test when the starter motor started to turn more slowly and then eventually stop, all this was with the plugs out. The solenoid is getting power on start key turn and battery is good, is this how starter motors fail?
Starter motor failure?

I dont know, I grew up with the notion that you could overheat a starter motor.. anyway I found out what happened, the solenoid was sticking, so I took out the starter motor (I say that as if it was something simple to do.. ha!), gave it some percussive maintenance and starter motor started popping freely. Put it back and wouldnt you know it my ignition switch failed... doh. That will be replaced in due course, as the dash is coming out too..
So as I was just doing a compression test I just jumped the solenoid and got my testing done. Anyway 12bar (approx 170psi) across the board, but plugs are black all 5 equally, so either the valve seals are worn or the turbo seal is worn. If the turbo shows obvious oil issues then I may just keep the head on. I have a hunch that not all valve seals would go at the same time so I am guessing turbo.Comment

my experience of all VAG engines is that the plugs come out looking a little black (dry) never looked at s2 plugs yet though.Comment

You can still do all the valve stem seals without taking the head off.
I have done it several timesComment
