Hi guys, looking for a car for the wife for the winter. Had been lookin at 4x4s etc but a 2.8 k plate 80 quaytro has just turned up locally. Looks clean and well maintained but its got 200k on it.
Am i right in thinking these engines are not great at this sorta mileage? And whats likely to go? Cams??
IMHO mileage is not an issue. Make sure you replace the cam belt & tensioner as these seem to be the most common failure (probably due to poor maintenance). I loved my 2.8q coupe

Good advice, but I would go further.
If you do change the cam belt and tensioner, you might as well do the thermostat and water pump, too. Another thing to check is the valley pan gasket. They tend to leak.
I loved my AAH, but you need to do some maintenance on gaskets and such.
Sensors: O2, MTFS, temp sensor. Should be checked, preferably changed.
Hoses: Check the plastic breather hoses out the back of the valve covers (check the valve cover gaskets, too). These crack easily and are not expensive to replace. Give the throttle body a good clean while you are in there.
Last thing. NEVER run full synthetic oil in the AAH V6.
Thanks guys, it was at the local auction which i missed so i phoned up later that night. Id assumed it was a trade in etc but the owner had taken it home. So....i scour the local ads and true enough it pop up on gumtree a day or two later (was at work at time) so decided to call later on, guess what, the time i get home its no longer there! SOAB!
Don't get hung up on it too much.
Those engines are pretty thirsty and the 12 valve ones do not have all that much power either.
Besides the obvious cam belt things, they tend to blow head gaskets every now and then as well especially at higher mileage...
A V6 is still quite expensive to maintain. I'd look for a 1.8Tq A4 B5 or a 1.9TDI.
The difference in maintenance between a 4 banger and a V6 is quite big, not to mention the fuel costs.
