    Engine reassembly start question

Hey guys just put my motor back together after solving my oil pump issue and putting my new rings in and reassemble of the whole motor, I have a question about how long it would take for my car to start after not having any fuel in the lines , I tried last night for about two cranks 15-20 sec each but no cigar also battery was giving out , any tips and wait to look for if anything , approximately how long or how many cranks am I looking at before it should start ? Thanks in advance

Very first start will take a couple of attempts 5-10sec unless you primed the fuel line first.
Charge your battery before you try next time as they are easy to flood too.
Is it fully refitted or are their boost pipes etc still off?

Spin her over with the plugs out until you get oil pressure registering on your gauge. By the time that has built up your fuel lines should have been purged as well.

No need to have the plugs out IMO, disconnecting the hall sender or ECU is enough to cause it not to start.
Unless you want to force no compression, but I don't see much point in that.

Of course if you have not done up the plugs yet, then I see your point

Everything is connected and ready to go , I think my biggest concern would be flooding it

You are using aftermarket engine management I think?

Isn't there an option to just toggle the fuel pump relay?

On Motronic if you disconnect the Hall sender and turn it over, the relay will be activated but the injectors will not be.
So this allows you to get the pressure up.

yes im running vems, if i press the gas pedal 3 times and hold it it will cut of the injectors, should i do this during cranking until it catches?

also i had to stop cranking last night because my fuel pressure regulator was leaking (which i found out to be the bolts up top a little loose, so today i will re-install that, hence a 0 psi pressure reading after 2 cranks i saw)

I don't know how you do this on VEMS.

Your objective is to get the fuel pressure up so the pump must run without the injectors being fired.
Once that is done, you can start firing the injectors...

Too much talk about a simple thing

sorry its just holding just the gas pedal all the way which engages the flood clear feature, and agreed i will get the pressure up and should be good to go, thanks again guys !

Simple trick is to unclip the cover from the fuel pump relay, then manually close the contacts to make the pump run. I prefer to do it that way to check for any fuel leaks before cranking the engine over.

I accidentally came across this tip while trying to remove said relay..

could you explain a little further where to find the fuel pump relay on a urs4? and how to close the contacts?

also would this flood the motor, or will just run enough fuel to pressurized the fueling?

cant this ^^^ also be done by just turning the key on and of to run the fuel pump until it is pressurized?

Sry i have no idea where the relay is located in an S4/6.

Wont flood anything as the injectors arent being triggered, it will just circulate fuel through the fuel rail and back to the tank. You will hear the air being purged from the system as the pump runs.

Turning the key on/off wont work as the relay is only triggered when the ECU senses the engine turning over.

As 5cyl man says, i always crank the engine with the plugs out and injectors unplugged to build up oil pressure. Reason i remove the plugs is to reduce load so it turns over faster and builds pressure quicker, also ensures all the bearings have oil before putting any load on them. I usually do it again with the plugs in for good measure, no real reason other than peace of mind and to make sure everything sounds/feels right. If there is an issue or any leaks you want to find them now before it fires up.

very good point i will have to do that also, (may be a stupid question), but when building up oil pressure will this read on the oil pressure gauge even though the car isnt literally on?

A good indicator of decent oil pressure is when oil has arrived at the cams and it is clearly visible and flowing nicely - after it has been cranked for a reasonable amount of time - a spare battery is usually a good idea here.
