  • Idle dropping off to a stall and hesitating under acceleration

Hope everyone has had a good Christmas and that your S2's haven't given you too much grief!

Yesterday evening my ABY started stuttering and stalling. It started with a boost cut when I floored it. Now when idling the revs sometimes immediately and sometimes after 20 seconds drop and it will stall unless I blip the accelerator. When at a standstill trying to pull away with no accelerator is impossible. Also when on the move and accelerating hard there will be 2-3 seconds of hesitation before it starts accelerating as normal. And then when getting close to full load I get boost cuts.

It wasn't much of a fun drive back from Somerset today! But made it home fine.

    So what could be wrong?

    So far, I've:
Unplugged the MAF and refitted which has had no affect.
Looked for a boost leak or a blown off hose and have found none.

Does this point to anything else inparticular or would a full boost leak test be a good place to start?

Recheck the MAF connection, making sure the pins are aligned and clean.

If that doesn't help, then it is down to a boost leak (split hose somewhere) or an ignition issue.

    For ignition issues, try these:

    Good luck.

Cheers for the replies, I've pulled the codes now and will set about cleaning the MAF and boost leak testing in a moment. Thought I'd post the results first though:

          00561 - Mixture Adaptation
13-10 - Adaptation Limit (Mul) Not Reached - Intermittent
          00553 - G70 signal too low
          07-00 - Please Register/Activate
00537 - Lambda -regulating limit exceeded
          11-00 - Please Register/Activate

When I started it up it stalled. But on second start the it idled perfectly for 10 mins or so until it started to get warm and the idle started dropping off and threatning to stall again...

Hopefully it will be an easy MAF clean but having had MAF problems before I'm thinking it's something else.

Massive boost leak or dead maf.
            Pressure test, don't look

I know the symptom you are describing exactly.

Thanks again for the replies, it turned out to be an easy fix! I took the MAF off to clean it and found that the wire had snapped!!!

Quite annoying as it was a fairly new MAF! Had a spare in the stores though which I have fitted and it is back on song. Might have to pencil me in for an RS4 MAF conversion Dmitri!

Good news. You found your issue. Which wire snapped where (for future reference I will add a note to my G70 info post) (click on the G70 label in the lower left corner of this diagram

The very thin wire has snapped where it mounts to one of the slightly thicker bars as marked by the X here:
