You need to get it on vcds mate. I had this on a mk3 recently chased an immob fault thinking it caused it not to start. It would fire and run for few seconds then cut out. It didn't log a fault in engine but eventually traced it to a none reading crank sensor. Took seconds with vcds.
The transponder ring around the barrel can cause prob.
You do need to get it on vcds mate save the guess work. Someone who knows what they are doing with vcds Will diagnose it quick save guessing with parts.
You also need to identify what type of immob you have 1 2 or 3.
What letters are on your key?

VCDS VAGCOM or SNAP ON MODIS will not communicate with this car, no idea why. I am very close to scrapping this car as I dont have the money to send off ECU for immo bypassing.....
Have replaced everything that would potentially cause these symptoms bar the ECU/IMMO.

That car has an IMMO 1 version. You need a new transponder cip and need to adapt it to the immobileser box using the 4 digit PIN code. OR you can use an immo box simulator or you can bypass the immo from ECU. So you have at least 3 options.
For me is crystal clear that you cannot communicate with the ECU because the Kline fron ECU gets into the IMMO box and IF the transponder cip is recognised you will be able to communicate with the ECU.
I can help you to bypass the immo .
