    ABY Boost Pressure

    Hi All,
What boost pressure would be expected from a Homefried ABY with 195k miles, and (I believe an RS2 IC), otherwise standard. Previous printout showing 265bhp. I don't necessarily suspect any problems, as she holds 18/19 psi (According to dash guage) without any drop off. She performs well, with mpg of mid/high 20s. Just wanted to know if these figures are what to expect. Ex Steve (Knight Rider's) car, which I believe some of you know.
    Thanks.

Home fried aby engines are roughly 280bhp. They should boost to 1.2 bar in 1st to 4th I think and then boost to 1.4 bar in 5th and 6th i think.... Someone else should know...

Can't help directly, but it is so worthwile to buy a boost gausge for these cars, easy to fit in one of the three centre vents, and not too expensive.

Chris- The readings I am getting are roughly what you have quoted,

Mac- Yep, I have a Centre-Vent Guage, and this is where I have taken my readings.

Thanx both, as I said- I didn't believe I actually had a problem, just didn't know what boost to expect.

Just to be clear on what you're asking - you've given the car WOT in a high gear from low revs and then watched the boost gauge reading as the revs and boost increase?

Cheers Rusty- As soon as my hangover from last night clears properly, I'll take her out and try- but I'm sure that's what I've done before.

On a Homefried ABY, the RS2 IC will reduce boost due to the IAT compensation function of the ABY ECU This means that you'll only see 21 PSI in the summer or on the rollers after a run or two. I was seeing 1.3-1.4 Bar (18-19 PSI) on most 1.5 Bar chips. Someone like prj can remove this for you, should you want to make the most of the RS2 IC's cooling abilities. Up the top, you should be seeing 0.8 Bar or so (10-11PSI).

Here is a homefries boost map that I've posted in the gallery section, taken from a RR session.

                  Thanx again Lads-
My dilemma is- overall I am happy with performance vs MPG vs Driveability/reliability, and afterall, I use her to/from work as much as a weekend toy, and my original question was whether or not she was giving the performance that would be expected (bearing in mind that I have nothing to compare with!) and it sounds like she is doing what is expected (almost). By sending car or ECU to PRJ to give me a tad more boost, am I gonna lose some of the characteristics, and also I am trying desperately Not to go down the route of continually looking for More power, with the additional expense, etc. (And I'm only a bloke afterall, with marginal willpower)

Nothing wrong with extracting the best from what you have and the current chip is not utilising the IC properly, so there's your justification!

Include the full details of the engine's spec with the ECU, when you sent it to Prj, and let us all know what the result is.

Any idea what costs would be involved in getting ECU sorted? Timescale?
And the most important question- would it REALLY make much difference?
