    MAF killed :(

I think my MAF has died. Its been running under boost pressure for about 2 weeks now, its the original one thats done 160k miles. The reason behind my thinking is that the car is running very rich now, it stinks when just ticking over at idle, I will pull fault codes, if any, and also will check the idle CO.

It was running perfectly, but over the last couple of days it started to act up. Will see what i can find.

Guess the old piece of junk didnt like being boosted

Lol, this is what supposedly happens after 450 crank HP with a stock MAF... check if the wire is still in one piece... there's also electrical tests that you can do on it to see if it's ok or not...

    Back to some more packing...

Yeah i know how to test it dood. I will do it tomorrow, its too cold to do it tonight. Will have to buy a new one If it is dead, but it still drives ok ish. I havent driven it hard since the RR session as i filled it with cheap 95 ron fuel by accident on the motorway.

Thats bad news Tom, either way it could end up costing you a fortune. Only other way is to maybe alter the flange on your tubular manifold to allow your maf on the intake side again???

          Just a thought. Good luck.

          Cheers,

Chris, this won't help at all in case the MAF wire got sucked out of there... The problem is airflow through a given diameter hole. Once you get too far, the air flow sucks the MAF wire out of the housing, or at least rips it off. I don't know if this is Tom's problem yet, it could be an electronic failure, which wouldn't surprise me much given the mileage on the poor old MAF.

Vadim, let's wait for Tom to post the final word on this first. This sounds like an electronic failure to me, not a wire "rip-off" but we'll see... till then we won't know for sure...

If it's the wire, then yes, the M5 could be a solution, but it's too expensive, there's far cheaper than this available!!!

                  Tom,

I had a very similar problem earlier. The exhaust gas smelled like a trabant and it was obvious that unburnt benzin was dripping from the exhaust pipe. Consumption was exreme and after a while I felt like on cylinder was missing. The only thing I did was to touch the connector of the MAF and all this disappeared. I took some time to clean the connection. Once my mate at the local VWAUDI took his booklet containing the voltage values etc and measured the values at MAF just to find that two of the volt values were some 8-10 percent lower than it should have been. And still is. The feckin+ MAF is a *******.

How do you measure the MAF values?

                    Wich are the correct ones?

Damn shame Tom I was wondering how long it would last because I wanted to do the same thing to my setup.

There are 5 or 6 legs within the MAF connector and a certain value can be measured between certain legs at iddle and at rpm. If no one here on the forum knows these and its needed, than I ask my man to give me the pages with the data and you can do it with a simple multimeter. Its not adjustable, though, so if its wrong.....
