Would the people buying/using the aftermarket items be confident enough in its quality (and the person who fits it) not to treat it as a service item?

Cheers guys, I do feel like I had a lucky escape.
Hahaha, im not sharing my sympathy comments..... ah go on then.... hahaha
Well in my owership they were all only ever touched with the wrench with the torque settings so no never hit by me or my mechanic mate as we did the whole thing on my mums drive.... They came undone easy enough as you would expect for such a low level of torque when I needed them to.
Under the previous owners, who knows. Being an Ex AA van I would doubt it but then again you never know how anyone treats anything and as many people know, a garage is not neccessarily the place to go for someone with the most knowledge. We have all heard stories of bodging (Not saying this always happens and not saying I would expect this from a garage - Im not trying to insult anyone with this comment)
I feel for anyone who has this happen to them, bartholomeus (sp?) and the Op. Glad you guys and myself found out about the break before it was to late - i would hate to imagine the cost of repairing the damage done!
So.... Billet and ABY.... rough cost??? hahahaha - Im not chancing my Audi in anyway!
Oddly enough I know a few mates with T4's and I think all of them bar my brother have had this sprocket damage or do something to cause damage on all of their engines... Both, the 2.5's and 1.9's (ACV, AJT, ABL and 1Z) So if anyone has one of these engines in anything I would keep an eye. Most of them reported snapped woodruff keys, mine was the only one that snapped (ACV)Comment

Hopefully, if a batch of billet gears are made, the price will come down a bit
I think I'll fit one of these when I change the cambelt this year. Can't believe it's 5 years since I did the job last!Cheers'en, AndyC

strangely, I'll be up for a billet one - if there is a GB....
My cambelt was also changed only around 5 yrs ago, but really not sure of the mileage since the toothed sprocket was changed - I'm sure it was not changed at the same time, as it didn't come as part of the belt ki -idler, water pump seal, bolt and belt, but not pulley - and who knows when it was changed prior to that.
I do know that an impact gun was not used when mine was changed - but it may be it was not closely examined before re-use...
I have fitted a new standard one, correctly torqued up, so hopefully will be ok now. I have plans afoot for a new engine, so will have a billet one for that...

Mine just went last night while pulling off from a roundabout and giving it the beans... found sections of this toothed pulley in the undertray as well as bits of the oil pump casting where it had broken coming out... 4 bolts neatly on the tray also, one sheared in half. Was a brand new audi part too! Not a clue why yet, definitely not impact gun related. I wonder if it's anything to do with belt tension?

Odd how this post has come up today... almost as if everyone knew it had happened.Comment

Iff you look closer...the notchwhere the damper comes over the timing belt pulley is flat...soo..either your 4 screws were loose...or the damper was installed wrong to the timing belt pulley..Mine just went last night while pulling off from a roundabout and giving it the beans... found sections of this toothed pulley in the undertray as well as bits of the oil pump casting where it had broken coming out... 4 bolts neatly on the tray also, one sheared in half. Well spotted!
I would say that belt tension on the drive belts could be a factor in these failure, though maybe not that one.Comment

Definitely a very good spot! Don't know how I screwed that one up (or didn't) because when I did the job I was following the numerous guides online obsessively and I remember torquing everything to spec.
After seeing all those bolts in the tray I had feared they weren't done up right. This one's going to cost me bigtime.... You have my permission to call me a **** now.
In other news does anyone want to buy a 3B S2 with engine damage?...Comment
-
You can at least take the head off to look for possible failures? On my 3B the woodruff key was gone but there was no engine damage. You might be lucky mate.Comment

I would be happy to ask the guy making my steering rack bar to do a run of machine cut gears rather than cast.
Any interest?ChefComment
