    Twin intercoolers

A couple of people have been asking how the twin intercoolers on my car are connected together so while i was under her today i took a picture...

I'm no expert, but according to a book I've read lots (Forced Induction Performance Tuning - A Graham Bell) dual intercoolers are thought to be detrimental to performance unless plumbed in parallel.
Obviously space is an issue with these engine bays though, and its easy to say fit two in parallel but much harder to actually do.
I've not got the book infront of me but I'm sure the reason is less impedance to flow and therefore less pressure loss (like two resistors wired in parallel as opposed to series).
Same book also suggests ways to duct coolers to improve there heat transferance rate slowing the air as it passes the core by having a smaller opening fanning out to the full width of the core.

Best example I can give is...
            ======== <--Cooler
            \ /
            \ / <--Tapered duct.

Your car is complete and no doubt fantastic, I'm not criticising your build just making an observation.

This is the graph that I did to explain why running two intercoolers in series isn't very cost effective. You gain a lot of resistance (pressure drop) (linear with intercooler length) for not much extra temperature drop:

I imagine the extra length of pipework involved to link them in parallel given the different locations would result in more lag. Pipeing in parallel may be better if you can locate them in parallel to. But then you would have room for one big one!

All interesting theories on paper, I have taken one out and simply replaced it with a length of 3" pipe had absolutely no effect on performance but I saw 7 degrees peak increase in temperature..

With the twin setup it cruises at 23 degrees and raises to a peek of 27 at 2bar at an ambient of 19 degrees.

I also now run a .82 hot side as the .6 was to aggressive so in theory I have added lag..

Where are these intercoolers from? I'm trying to sort out a neat solution in my typ85 90q and a lot of intercoolers I'm seeing are pretty rubbish as far an the inner core density goes.

One is a PACE intercooler with fabricated end caps and the other is from a URS4 again with fabricated end caps. I satisfied myself with the cores prior to starting..

Same here. Couldn't see or feel any difference in performance or lag when I switched from two IC's to one.

All good theories but there is no way you can package a large enough FMIC or parallel twins under a stock UR front bumper, what Darren has done is the best solution IMHO

More dense air and less of it, Or less dense air and more of it, ? Same thing ? Or does a degree or two make that much of a difference ? this is a good thread
