Puff of smoke on startup...

I'd fit a 3076/0.82 rather than a 3071/0.82.
If it's a 3071 you want then GTX3071.
Surge is not a problem at all with 0.82 hotside.
Alternatively consider a HX35 turbo. It will be about 2/3rds the price, and more reliable.
Transient response is worse, but full boost is similar.Comment

I know it fits with RS2 EM with some massaging.
I really don't know about the evo...Comment
-
I run a 10 mill spacer on the RS2 and it just clears. But I don't know if it will clear the Evo with a 10 mill spacer, and if it doesn't there's gonna be a problem on the S2 as it's not gonna fit from the other side.Comment

Just spoke to Richard about hybrids and there are a few RS2 based options but no 26/7s available at the moment... Will put on a spare turbo and see if it still smokes and if it does, then I'll have to re-think things.Cheers'en, AndyC

Same problem here on my AAN Rusty.the car just smoke out in the morning.let's say once the engine fired up,it starts to smoke suddenly for 10secs.
but mine didn't think it's from the turbo since i have removed the spark plugs and found some oil mist inside the chamber, rough idle while it's smoking.
the Turbois GT2871 with 40,000kms on clock.Recently,i replaced the valve stem seals. All of them were toasted.I have tried to move side to side on the
end of the valves and found some excessive wear on them.I will be doing a leakdown test before remove the head off for a rebuild.one of a few I5 from Asia.Comment

This sounds very similar. I too have some rough running when it's puffing, so I think that the valve guides and seals are more likely than the turbo, as I can't see how the turbo would cause it rough running from cold start, as lambda would be the only sensor affected...
Back at the idea of a head rebuild now.Cheers'en, AndyC

Rough running during start can be caused by using incorrect injectors until the lambda warms up...
What injectors are you using?Comment
-
RS2 injectors.
The rough running is accompanied by a puff of oil smoke and only happens for 10 seconds, maximum. The oil smoke clears after 30 seconds, maximum. There is no visible puff of smoke or rough running on warm or hot start.
The setup has been the same for 18 months but this problem is relatively new.
That said, I will try some stock RS2 chips as a baseline.Cheers'en, AndyC

Seems we are in the same boat, mine puffs smoke on cold start, especially if the car was really hot when shut down. I'm just running on borrowed time until i can do an engine swap this summer and fit the RS2 hybrid that Richard has worked his magic on

Thats what i meant, drive normally and shutdown for the night its 50/50 if it will smoke the next morning. Drive it hard and shut it down for the night, guaranteed it will smoke on start up next day. As you say i can drive around all day stopping/starting and it seems fine. In my case it dosent stumble and idles properly on startup so i suspect its just the turbo seals seeping oil into the hotside. If it were valve seals i would expect a rough idle as it fouls the plugs sucking oil into the combustion chamber.91CQ20v - Gone to a new home
