    thoughts on wossner pistons

I'm thinking of getting these to build a stroker. 82mm forged. Anyone have problems with these. Seem to need less bore clearance than other makes, 0.07mm, so good for a 500hp daily? Cheers des.

My friend has ~500hp 5-cyl rallycross audi with wossner pistons, he has never had any problems with those.
I don´t see any reasons why they wouldn´t work on daily driver.

Looking good then. Just need to figure out what rods I'm getting to finalize on compression height required before I order. I like the idea of the normal 32-33mm compression height off the shelf pistons with 155 rods. 159 rods gets into custom compression heights and $$$ I'm guessing. But I can't find off the shelf rifle drilled rods in 155mm size just 159mm. Nothin simple is it...

Can anyone tell me what the exact compression ratio is with off-the-shelf Wossners?

PEC web data seems to suggest an 8.0:1 ratio, but then it quotes stock as 10.0:1 which is obviously a mistake. 8.0:1 seems quite low though?

Does anyone know the definitive answer?

If i had to build my engine agine i would go with wossner, i have JE's in at the mo and they are oil burners due to what they are made off, wossner all day for road use,
Boost is what makes the world go round.......!

We use wossner,s piston and con rods at Big cc Racing very good quality. Not seen any fail yet. Unlike J E pistons that seem to have very little meet between valve pockets and top ring. Wossner also do head gaskets.

You need 8:1 through if your shooting for 500 ponies , unless you are running funky fuel, high octane /E85 etc.
For daily pump petrol i would go for 8:1

I'd like to shoot for 9.3:1 for nice off-boost throttle response.

Wossner are about the only company I can find that have their own foundry, so they are in control of the entire production process from raw materials acquisition to final product. Plus they're made in ze Fatherland, which is a real plus.

Unless I can find some compelling data against, or am stuck with 8:1, I see no reason to look elsewhere.

Saving, perhaps, Mahle Powerpack pistons, which are the OEM du jour.

Here's a PM I got from my brother over on TheProjectPad just today about this same issue...

That noise was the engine unnecessarily wearing itself.

Pete DOES know what he's talking about, and I have a ton of respect for him, as well as what he's done for the community.

That said; he's trying to sell parts, point blank. The JE's are available wholesale with an aggressive price structure, meaning more profit.

Pete didn't address the additional wear; because he knows that it's true. He didn't address the decreased lifespan of the engine; because he knows it's true. He didn't address the fact that 2618 alloy is completely unnecessary in most street car builds; because he knows it's true.

Pete posted anecdotal evidence of "guys who drive 45 miles each way to work". No offense Pete. It is what it is.

Lets keep things clear, and in perspective here folks. Use the right product for its intended purpose. If your trying to build a drag car, dyno queen, or have money to burn, and want to rebuild every couple years Godspeed to you. Run those 2618 alloy pistons..

For all the rest of the builds out there (assuming you're 500ish WHP or less) run a piston with OE like expansion, and cylinder to wall clearances.

You don't need 8.0 at all for 500 bhp, easily run 8.5 and avoid pinking with decent mapping

I am talking real HP not ego dyno HP and real compression ratio .
                          Stock ABY is not 9.3
                          Not even 9 !
                          it is actually about 8.8:1

Even with this people hsvr needed thicker head gaskets to hit a real 500 HP
                          On pump fuel.
Ask yourself what real the compression is on an ABY
                          With a thick gasket .

Granted with head work it can be done at higher compression but on stock engine apart from rods only with ego dyno will you see 500 HP.

I asked directly, about 9.3:1 compression and clearance for ~0.5mm oversized valves.

From Wossner Pistons in North America:

We do not offer a shelf piston for your engine. We can build you a custom set to get both the compression you are needing and cut the valve pockets larger diameter for oversize valves. For 5 pistons with pins, locks, and rings you are looking at $998.00 and takes about 6-8 weeks. We would also need a sample piston. Alex Russell

Well I am about ready to drop a few hundred quid on a set of Wossners

Anyone have any feedback on the quality of the rings supplied with the Wossner piston sets?
I remember JP mentioned the higher end coated & chamfered KS ones were among he best for road use, how do these compare?
