    ABY / AAN Engine Differences

(Ignoring the bolt-on inlet parts & PAS pump)

EDIT:- What are the differences, if any between the same age ABY and AAN block and head?

Can an AAN block / head be used in an ABY application? I am looking a the cost of sourcing a spare engine to give me one to build up.

    Similarities:-

    Block and head:-
    • Block
    • Rods - 027198401C (1 set: connecting rods)
    • Pistons - 034107065M (piston complete 81,00)
    • Crank
    • Head
    • Cams

    Ancillaries:-
    • EM
    • Turbo oil & coolant lines
    • Turbo
    • Oil pump
    • Water pump
    • Crank sprocket
    • Cambelt
    • Cambelt tensioner
    • Relay roller
    • Cambelt covers

    Differences:-

    Block and Head:-
    • Front pulley (can this be swapped for an ABY? Bolt-on?)
    • Slightly different rocker cover (Breather pipe exit, bolt-on)
    • Flywheel (bolt-on).
    • ...

    Ancillaries:-
    • Vibration damper & pulley
    • Sump
    • Engine mounts
    • Thermostat housing/oulet
    • Water rail
    • Inlet manifold
    • Fuel rail
    • Fhrottle body
    • PCV plumbing
    • ISV plumbing
    • Cam cover
    • Turbo heat shields
    • Dipstick tube

I am doing exactly this right now Andy, using a 1995 AAN engine with ABY ancilliaries
Basically the block, head and internals I believe are identical.

I believe i have now go a definitive list of ancilliary differences, I'll dig it out.
But you could take everything off your ABY and bolt it onto an AAN.

In fact, besides the block, head & internals most things are different!
The only ancillary things that are the same are I believe:

        EM
        Turbo oil & coolant lines
        Turbo
        Oil pump
        Water pump
        Crank sprocket
        Cambelt
        Cambelt tensioner
        Relay roller
        Cambelt covers

I was only really interested in the fundamental metal parts. Bolt on parts aren't an issue, as I have an ABY with all the bits I need on it...

That said, we can start to expand the scope of this thread to become an all-encompassing affair and bring in the ADU if needs be. Might be quite a nice pooling of resource in 1 place.

I was wondering why he hadn't referenced my post at the beginning.

                            Andy,

When I rebuilt my engine back in 2003 I purchased an AAN short block which was a direct replacement for the original. Main difference on one I had was that it had a different flywheel there were some other ancillaries I swapped from original block but all fitted up fine.

The AAN block has some small differences oposed to ABY.
The pas pump bracket bolts....the aan block has some threaded holes in plus there.
And the important think wich i miss now is: the threaded holes for the AAN snub mount, wich is in the lower right hand part of the block.
Iff i had that i could build another style front to receive front mounted radiators in my sport replica.
                              Hope this helps!
