    Fitting new lifters / tappets

As per the title, I'll be doing this job soon and wondered if there is anything special that I need to do?

I have read / heard about priming the lifter; is this necessary?

I have checked the lifters I have and about 12 seem to be solid, with my weight unable to move the centre plunger where the other 8 are free moving. Is this correct? Seems a bit odd to me...

    TIA

iirc 2 types. one is lighter than the other. most are primed ready now. soaking them in some oil may help.

I've always filled them with oil with a syringe, but i've always had the head out of the car so i was able to turn the head over slowly and let them settle. Doing that in the car could mean valve+piston contact.

Submerge them in some oil and pump the piston a few times, the bit where the valve touches, this will purge them of air.

Put the ones are moving into engine oil and press onto stem piston few times untill you cannot push anymore. Install them, take care at cams timing marks and cams caps...as those can brake iff tightened wrong. Let them settle for few hours. Start the engine and enjoy!!!
          Regards!

I just took out the old, fitted the new, left it for an hour once back together and fired her up, held the revs at 3k for about 2 mins and never touched them since...

S.h.!.t..... you still want that locking tool....

I've done this on the ones I can move but there are 12 where even with my weight pressed on them, they're not moving...

The ones that are moving had a lot of air come out of them when priming, so I would assume that they were not primed.

they will have air in them after the oil sdrained. the stuck ones may free up after soaking in oil. maybe clean them out with something first.

depends if you want to buy new really. them old cams will be used to their "mates" opening valves for them. each one nicely worn to match.

I spoke to the person I sourced these from. To fit them, the engine needs to be rotated by hand to make sure that there is no metal-metal contact and only then can I start the engine. If there are any stuck open, then I've been told I have to leave the cam pressing on it overnight or so. Bit more complex than I was expecting

These are the lightweight INA ones.

Andy you can squeeze them out in a vice to make them all soft if it gives you more confidence. it will just clatter a bit more on first start up..

fit them after soaking them in engine oil of your chosen grade. fit them give them an hour then turn over by hand. if your happy turn engine over with plugs out to allow oil to get into head. then if happy turn over with plugs in and allow oil to get to temp.
stand back and enjoy your tappet noise free engine. easy.

Old thread I know, but I'm planning to do this soon, along with a new cambelt water pump roller etc. Is the advice still the same; soak, install, wait, turn by hand, wait, spin with plugs out, run up to temperature?

really its just that. fit them and drive off. different to the solid lifter type. drop these in lubricated and away you go.

if you are fitting new then its just oil and fit new. if you are reusing mark them up first before removal so they they go back as they came out.
