    My turbo has eaten something!

Was in the process of putting everything back together and noticed strange iron filings in the MAF-Turbo hose. Had a feel of the turbine and something didn't feel quite right so got a mirror and:

    ****

Luckily I've been collecting turbos recently and have a refurbished RS2 ready to fit.

But can't help but think that this might have reduced the resale value a bit.

Won't be getting back on the road today either, any tips for changing the turbos over? And does anyone have an idea as to what might have caused this? I fear some careless **** might be responsible

that's a proper set of cut down blades.

            surprised the casings not fooked.

looks like its had a rough round file on it.

ives seen some bad second hand units. best to get it checked before fitting if you do another. the pitfalls of turbos I suppose.

im sure better turbo experts will help here give you the lowdown on it

I can't find any sign of bits of MAF missing although the mesh is a bit bent so something could have gone through. I've probably had 3 MAF's fitted since I last inspected the turbo though so could be from any of them.

Hopefully I'll find more clues when I get the turbo off.

same thing with the turbo that was on the engine in the s2 cab originally, the blades looked like this. Apparently it still boosted fine just made a bit more noise.

You will probably find the engine has injested something and some marks on the pistons and head face around the valves

Similar thing happened to my old 10V quattro

I found a small metal disc in the housing that presumably did the damage, but to this day I still don't know where it came from

Have been making some progress with taking the turbo off but am stuck all the studs and bolts have come undone apart from one EM-Turbo stud that is stuck in the EM. The nut has come off but I haven't got enough room between the body and the inner wheel to slip it off:

I've tried jacking the engine up but this doesn't open up quite enough space. Any tips?

I had similar trouble, but I had my front crossmember off, so the front snub could lift up , so jacking the engine up a little did it for me
