So has anyone actually blanked off this hose at all before? Would make things much easier than having a new pipe welded in.

I've had my cover machined now here are the results:

Now the cover just needs a good clean!

I can get this done again for other forum members, PM me for details. The specs I went for are a mix of the above solutions. The holes have been bored to 1.222" and a depth of .775" and the knotches cut out to an angle of 30 degrees to clear the oil cap. The rubber of the coils then needs to be trimmed to the same lenght as in AndyP's conversion detailed here

I haven't fitted yet but it all looks good to me.

Do you have the short or long coils ?
With the longer coils you don't need to cut the rubber at all
if you have the notches machined out as you have.
The longer coils part numbers are:
                RED 06E 905 115E
                BLACK 07K 905 715F

I have the 115 coils. Should have said, it's the lower part of the rubber that needs to be trimmed not the top bit where the knotches go.
