tools 10mm and 13mm socket/ratchet. flat head screwdriver.
remove spare wheel.remove main panel boot carpet. lift it up and there's three bolts at the back. release half of the "sticky" boot carpet. remove wheel well carpet.

remove the large steel protection plate. a few bolts around the side edges.
    disconnect loom to pump connector.
spin metal disc anti clockwise and remove. you might have to tap it with a rubber hammer or something to get it started.
pull out sender. carefully release the pump from the cradle using a flat head screwdriver or something to hold back the tangs.

I advise against removing the basket if at all possible, its tricky to get out, and even more of a nightmare to snap back into place. As S2Tornado says just push the two tabs aside and pull the pump out of the basket, with a bit of practice you can do it with one hand.

at the risk of jumping on anothers thread. what's the best pump to get for a standard coupe 3b ?
mine is very noisy at times and the pitch increases with revs so i guess it dying.

You can either go with a plug and play replacement pump, PN 8A0906091G, from VDO/Siemens or Pierburg, or switch to the Bosch version (different connectors) or upgrade to a Bosch Motor Sports 040 or 044 which needs the 60 mm V8 fuel pump basket and a few bits and bobs.

Here is some fuel pump info:

96 s2 is aby. if yoyr to fit a 044 you need a different pump basket and filter for the basket. also and rs2 adapter and 1 way valve if pump isn't supplied with one.

on a 3b its same basket so easier to just pop the pump out.

THIS ALL DEPENDS ON IF YOUR ABY PUMP IS THE SKINNY ONE. SKINNY ONE = GET NEW BASKET.
