Uh Oh Oil leak! My S2 Avant Relationship Trouble!!

I had a feeling that buying a S2 Avant for a Project/Restoration would be a love hate thing haha!!

So here it is in brief....

Bought her from a forum member end of January this year, as a whole I was happy enough with the car, I knew there would be little niggles to sort as normal with cars of this age, but she was solid enough and the guy had done a pretty good job getting the engine running well and the car back to the original spec (Black full leather, Carbon Inserts etc)

She was as I expected a lovely drive, everything seemed tight and the car felt good
The minor things I needed to sort out were..

    - Underdash Shelf needed fixing up (All the wires were untidy and the relay bracket had snapped so everything was hanging down)

    - Front Arch Liners missing.

    - The Rear passenger door pull and elec window didn't work (Fixed)

    - Driver seatbelt didn't retract well (Still not sorted )

    - The rear wiper didn't clear properly (De-wipering anyway)

    - The Headlights needed changing back to Elipsoids (Changed)

    - O/S/F Wing was not Volcano black (Car having a respray)

So I began using her for my everyday car until she was ready to (or I had enough funds) have a respray but my driving time would be very very brief

After less than 2 weeks I was pulling out of the garage one morning and the clutch stuck in! Pressure plate had failed so in the garage it went for a new clutch etc. A total of £500 for parts and labour and I was back to collect her.

The Garage (A VW/Audi Garage where my Cousin works) told me that the car looked like it had been parked up for a while as it really needed new front discs and pads all round!.... and yes within a quick 10min drive I had taken her straight back to the garage
The brakes although didn't feel great (like normal stock S2 I thought) they were not scrapping when I was using the car before it went in??

To cut a long story short, trying to just get it back on the road on a budget I bought some rear discs and 4 pads from a forum member (went for this option because in the near future I would be upgrading anyway)
In the end I had to buy some brand new front discs from GSF and all round pads brand new

So by now in the short time I had owned her she had spent more time in the garage than on the road

In the time she was in the garage I started sourcing a few things I wanted.... OH did I say earlier 'here it is in brief' anyway, I bought a 90 rear reflector, a new rear bumper, clear side repeaters, glass blanking grommet, stereo.

Oh and yes another F***kin thing!!!! When it came out of the garage I noticed about a 2 inch bit missing off the corner of the front bumper where it meets the wheel arch so there is now like a triangle shape missing out of the wheel arch curve and the paintwork on this side of the bumper had like split!!!!...... I think it looks like some sort of strap or harness had done this? maybe from the car being taken to the garage?? Never let someone else organise getting your car to the garage!!!!

So now we are about up to date!!.... Can anyone guess whats coming next????

2 days ago I noticed a few oil spots where I had been parked, the guy at the garage had told me it had a very small oil leak, he did tell me what it was but said it was nothing to worry about...hhhmmm, well after a 30min drive I parked the car up for a hour and when I moved it this was left....

Excuse the bad picture quality, it was taken on my crappy phone, but I did put a 2 pence piece down so you could see the scale.

So I took it 2 mins home and placed a white tray under it all night and here's some more...

Now either that "small leak" has got a lot bigger or something else is up needless to say, the start of our relationship has not got of to a very good start

    lol

If that is engine oil you need to change it mate. It's bleedin' black as tar (from the photo) and is just trying to escape the Black Hole of Calcutta (your sump).

My guess it that isn't engine oil at all but maybe power steering fluid. Did you smell it/taste it?

Oil pressure switch and sender info

If it is oil, it could be as simple as the idiot light pressure switch under the intake manifold. About 5 GBP and will p*ss oil straight out when it fails.

Isn't S2 ownership a PITA!!! It all makes sense when you get it running right though... for about a day, then it's on to the next issue

You need to take off the undertray to find out where the oil leak is coming from, it can be deceptive as it falls on the udnertray and then spreads out. That does look like quite a volume of oil though, but again it could have been collecting for some time. Oil pressure switch and cotton reel sender unit you can see down alongside the rad. Looks like it needs a thorough service as Dave suggested
Maybe put up your location so someone local can give you some help rather than a random garage?

Thanks for the help guys, and cheers Steve, might have to take you up on that offer will be in touch.

Currently I've left it parked up on the drive and the leak seems to have subsided, definately will be servicing it next (my ownership has been so short yet extremely eventful that I've not had the chance yet )

Need to get to the bottom of the leak though!...asap!

Oh and dont worry I wont be giving up!! This is one relationship Im gonna try and stick too

Good eye. I think you are correct. Both should be at the same height on the block, i.e. the rear most knock sensor in the photo should likely be in the boss that is up to the left of its currently shown position.

                            Bought it just yesterday

Good spotting that it was in wrong location tho!

To make the seatbelt retract, just wash it in warm soapy water. I've just done the A6 and I have to be careful now as it'll have my eye out it retracts that quick

Just pull all the belt out and put a clamp on it to stop it retracting, then dump the lot in a bucket of warm soapy water and leave it to soak for half an hour. Give it a scrub with a soft nylon brush and then dry it. You'll be amazed at all the crap that comes out of it.
