    High Mileage engines

Hi chaps whats the score with high mileage s2 engines? I heard from a while ago, that once you start approaching the 200,000 mile point that you'd be looking for an engine rebuild.

If this is so? how much would it cost?
If I would do this I would look at upgrading it also..
I'm keen on the stroker line, where you can get big power with smoother and earlier power delivery.
(Unless I've gotten something mixed up here).

Any info would be gratefully appreciated chaps

Mine's at 173k and has just started to get a bit old. The problem with an engine rebuild is that you may require a re-bore and at that point, things get expensive. However, if you're looking at going for higher power, you'll do most of the work anyway, so it's just another £1k to add to the budget.

Thank you chaps, I'll contact this jnl racing -- is that a forum Member or a company online?

@Rusty, Do you mean 1k for a stock rebuild? or for upgrade? what does it involve?

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!
(Unless you're gonna mod it heavily anyway)

Lot's of AAN engines in the US still going strong well past the 200k mark. Mine went past 200k and only smoked a little on startup, which was probably down to stem seals. It's been rebuilt since but only 'cos I was in there modding it anyway.

Don't dismiss a car just because of high milage, you've got to buy on condition with these cars, and use your eyes and ears. The 3B engine I took out of my coupe had 193k on the clock and when I stripped the engine, the pistons, big ends and mains were all on std size and were still within factory spec, and it didn't burn a drop of oil.

I'll tell the story again, of a local firm who are Audi specialists and agents to several very well known brands of tuning products, who had a customer arrive with a 210k mile old S2. The owner accepted the risks and had it increased from 220bhp to 350bhp... I saw the car at point of modification and again some three years later, having a routine service at 265k and still making 350bhp, without issue.... The key to it is regular, balanced servicing.
