Advice or BTDT on hyd followers !!

    MY CAR HATES ME!!

    Long story short!

I have followers that wont pump on two cylinders on the intake, 1 , 4 .
engine had been removed and put back in
car was started with exhaust off to check running earths leaks ect ect..
timing belt was then done with all bits and bobs along with it..
exhaust put back on only to hear what i suspected as dry followers!
they just will not prime and are making a horrible racket, they can be depressed 2/3 mm before taking up the lash!!

now being happy that i know what it is
im not happy thinking of opening that crank bolt again

can anyone tell me can one cam be removed, ie. the intake and leave the exhaust ?

can post vid of dead lifters if needed ?

do i have to bite the bullet and remove both cams and belt ?

would i be mad not to replace all lifter on both cams and a new chain while there for peace of mind? deep down inside i know this is truth but

any help at all in this situation is MASSIVELY appreciated.

    steve

I cant see why one cam couldnt be removed while you carry out the work as long it is fitted back into the correct postiion when you reinstall it.

You can't lift out one camshaft on its own, there is not enough slack in the chain to get it up over the cam retaining studs.

Just bite the bullet and do it. I personally would be happy using good second hand units to replace the ones that are not lifting.

I would only replace with new if your doing a full head job or a fresh engine build.

You will not have to undo the crank pulley bolt. Leave the cambelt on the bottom sprocket, just slacken the belt and remove cam pulley. To remove the cams.

Worth noting they will take forever to fill and quite down with the engine idling, you really need to drive it around 3000rpms before they fully bleed themselves. I'd wait until you can drive the car before getting overly concerned about it.

I put kr cams in my 80q before and they went in together but wasn't sure with my 3B! So that clears that bit up

Get the oil warm and drive at 2500rpm for 3 mins, this should fill the lifters,
if this does not work then you will have to replace them.

Great point also !! But I have been trying to get them to pump for 2 days and no joy,
Even tried special oil for that purpose alone. No joy!

Considering it crossed my mind it might not be in the head , I'm rather relieved about it all now , cheers

90 euro for a set of ten new lifters!! going to replace all on the intake cam as the the exhaust side is fine, i might attempt to clean the exhaust.

i do have in my messhole of a greenhouse/workshop lol.. old lifters from a 6a 16v but opted for new ones as there only 9 euro each!

Not true in my experience. I replaced my AAN exhaust cam with an RS2 exhaust cam without removing the intake cam. I marked the cam chain where it had to go relative to the intake cam with a black felt tip market and was able to remove and install the exhaust cam without issue.

                          Chain was tired !

Phone pics, but all the rollers are pitted, some look to be cracking!!

exhaust cam wheel, chain contact mark is a bit high on the tooth ? i think so

                          same cam

Can a loose timing chain contribute to distributor rattle ?
There was quite a lot of slack on one side, and if rocked back and forth one cam would move before the other!
                            Hopefully it helps some

Yes it does, if you ever turn the cam over by hand and feel how it jumps over each cam lobe you can understand why it causes the chatter. Its always at its worst around 1500rpm in my experience, slack in the timing belt, chain, and wear in the dizzy shaft all contribute to it.
