Noisy fan belt on start up

This is no big deal but it annoys the hell out of me

Everytime I start the car up I get that squeking noise that I'm guessing is the fan belt, it continues for about 30secs afterwards. If water is poured on the belt the squeaking stops immediately but I'm not going to carry a watering can round with me for everytime I start the car

So, does anyone know of any wonder lubricant (KY Jelly answers need not apply) that will (a) stop the squeak and (b) maintain the friction required?

    Hi,

presuming is the power steering pump belt as the fan is electric.

Usually a sign of slipping ot age of the belt itself, i'd adjust or renew personally, the noise will just keep coming back. from memory you should be able to twist the belt up to 90degress with thumb and forefinger only, if looser then need to tension it up.

OK, cheers for that, I'll give it the 'twist test' later

It will be the alternator v belt. Its very short so the 90 degree test may not be the best test. I just look for no more than 1/2 inch lateral movement. Belts get old and hard, and wear on the sides, which causes it to slip as the alternator boosts charge on start up. If so replace the belt rather than over tensioning and putting a strain on the alternator bearings.

They stretch quite a bit right in the beginning, so IMO all you need is to tighten it up.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
