    1. Remove engine.

Oops. My bad, that is the first step in any B5 S4 repairs.

For you, doesn't the rear suspension and diff have to come out?

Oh wait, that is the C4 S4 fuel tank.

Doesnt the tank come out from the inside of the boot from under the carpet in the coupe?

All the wiring/hoses enter through the top cover for the fuel pump, so it should just be a case of disconnecting the filler tube and lifting it out.

I'm curious, turbo upgrade or direct replacements? Show us some pics...

yes tank comes out from inside the boot. The filler neck is integral to the tank so don't try to remove it! Goes without saying best to do it when then tank is empty!

Disconnect all the fuel lines from tank under the car
Remove all carpet trim from boot inc the strip glued across the rear of the cover over the tank
Undo the bolts holding down the tank cover and remove it
inside petrol filler flap, remove wire locking ring from the rubber grommet.
Disconnect the breather pipes from the expansion tank & remove it
Disconnect wiring from fuel pump and fuel level sender wiring connectors on the white plastic cap on top of the tank
Undo bolts holding tank flange to the chassis
Then unless I forgot something you are ready to lift out the tank (easier said than done, it is awkward and heavy!)

Gearbox, but my syncros were shot and clutch needed replacing regardless.
It's possible to replace them without dropping anything, but it's quicker to remove the box - and removing the box on these is very easy as opposed to the engine.

I can't really think of much you have to take the engine out for besides an engine rebuild...

Fancy changing the exhaust manifolds on my S4 as one is rattling?
