    Holset turbo question...help needed..

Hi guys, I noticed the other day my Holset HX40, started sweating a little oil near the hot side of the turbo (in the middle where the oil lines go)(you can see in the pic a little sweating), before I went ahead and took the turbo of, I started the car once more, and at idle it was smoking a little bit and when reved up would smoke a good amount. (VEMS lambda was reading good so not a rich fuel problem). Once i let it run, it would smoke right where the downpipe and hot side flange meet (must have seeped out of there), also by the bolts seen in the photo near the hot side.

Once I took the turbo of, there wasn't any visible oil by the impeller, but from the hot side i did notice when I peeked inside that there was a little oil/sludged oil.

Intake side was fine just had oil moisture around the housing.

Any ideas if the seals went inside or what could be the cause (weird cause turbo was rebuilt by previous owner supposedly (2000miles ago when i put it on).

Just an idea. Are the lines vertical and is your return line big enough? I remember reading at a Mitsu forum that some users had problem with the seals when they used garrett return lines that where smaller than 18 or 20mm on the inside.

the lines aren't a straight vertical drop down for the outlet, not horizontal but slightly below horizontal, and the return line is about 15 or so mm (ill have to double check on this may be 20)

return line needs to be within 10 degrees of vertical w holset as per their recommendations

I think 15 inner diameter is very small!

Here is what the manual states:

                      5. The minimum oil pressure, when the engine is on load must be 210 kPa [2.0 kgf/cm
                      2, 30 lbf/in2] and pressures upto 415 kPa [4.0 kgf/cm2, 60 lb/in
2] are satisfactory. Under idling conditions the pressure should not fall below 70 kPa
                      [0.7 kgf/cm2. 10lbf/in2].

                      6. The oil inlet pipe should be 9.5 mm [0.375 in.] bore minimum and the oil drain pipe should be 19 mm [0.75 in.] bore
minimum. The oil must drain downwards by gravity from the turbocharger into the engine under all operating
                      conditions.

i will have to clock the oil drain down to almost a vertical, and im pretty sure the drain is .75in, and the oil in i dont believe is .375, that I may have to change.

anyone have the manual/ spec for the hoses needed to fit a Holset Pro 52, may be getting my hands on one, and want to make the new oil lines universal to work with both possibly, (just a thought)

Holset permits oil return pipes to decline at an overall angle of not less than 30 degrees below horizontal.
All turbocharger applications require a pipe of internal diameter greater than 19 mm which has integrated
connectors. To ensure oil returns into the engine under all operating conditions, the return connection
into the engine sump must not be submerged and the outlet flange of the turbocharger must be 50 mm
above the maximum oil level of the engine sump pan. Crankcase pressure should be limited ideally to 0.8
kPa (0.12 lbf/in2) but 1.4 kPa (0.20 lbf/in2) can be accepted by reference to Holset

Recommended oil flows for the turbochargers are 3 litre/min at idle and 3.5 - 4.5 litre/min above maximum
                            torque speed.

Make your choice and download it, will unzip a pdf file: http://www.holset.co.uk/mainsite/pic...%20manuals.php
Too bad other manufacturers don't share info like this... o wait, they can't be serviced properly so why bother...

Does it need/have a restrictor in the oil inlet?

I remember reading a lot of discussion on motorgeek about restrictors on the oil inlet and large bore drains when Holsets were fitted.
