    Engine thermostat location

    Hi all.

Ive got a slight problem my engine seems to get quite hot round 100 centergrade plus and the fans dont seem to kick in. I dont know if its me worrying to or its a problem with the thermostat. Where abouts is the state my engine is the 7a 2.3 hope you can help.

    Thanks
    Dave

It's on the block just in front of the rad. Sounds like it might be an idea to bleed and check the headgasket too...

It's rare for them to failed closed, the almost always fail open. Is this only when stationary and idling? Have checked rad thermoswitch?

It's not on the rad it's on the block below the water manifold covered by a black plastic housing with a hose at right angles to the block that goes to the rad. If its failed closed then the rad will never get hot. Urs6 has a drain screw at bottom of rad that you have to remove bumper grill to access but don't know if S2 has anything equivalent hopefully an S2 owner can comment.

Is fairly normal for the temp to rise above 90 when sitting stationary, but should sit just below the 90 mark when moving.

As for location, follow the top radiator hose to the engine block, it connect to an alloy housing held on with two bolts, the thermostat is under that housing.

Thermostat is part 12, 2 bolts hold the housing on. There is a bleed bolt on the top left hand of the radiator, and one on the hose at the back of the engine bay going to the heater matrix, the one in the hose is often damaged.

They will go above 90 when stationary, but the fan should kick in.

              Fan switch/sensor?
