    Aby coupe: Fan speed problem

I have a problem with my fan as it doesn't kick in at the 1st speed.

It only kicks in at the 2nd speed at over 90 degrees.

I have checked the fuses and relays and they're all working fine.

Any ideas of what it could be?

    It's a 95 aby coupe with aircon.

    Thanks

Think there is a resistor type thing near your horns, if you looking at car from front it's under the right side of the front bumper has three wires going to it

Thanks for that, il have a look tomorrow.

Is it not likely to be a temperature sensor under the radiator?

It does kick in at full speed but i dont know how that sensor works.

i changed the resistor pack today underneath the windscreen washer bottle.

        Still having the same problem.

The fan doesnt kick in at speed one.

Only kicks in at full speed over 90 degrees.

        Any ideas?

not sure whats the matter with yours but if you turn on the air-con does the fan (radiator fan) run?

            No it doesnt.

What temp should the first speed fan kick in at anyway?

on my car (with air-con) if you turn on the air-con the radiator fan starts. i would say stage 1 speed.
Does your air-con switch light up when pressed?

Wont be a sensor problem then?

If the sensor under the radiator is faulty, will it still kick in the full speed fan?

first thing i'd do is remove the plug from the sensor (at bottom of radiator) and bridge the wires to see if the 2 speeds work. I think it should have 3 wires, 1 wire should be live? find that then bridge to the others.

If you have A/C and the fan works on 1st speed when you put the A/C on then the resistor pack is OK. Also the resistor pack itself is bulletproof.

The low radiator fan speed (known as 2nd speed) is controlled by the temp sensor screwed into the bottom of the radiator. Check the wires to the sensor as they are very exposed and get corroded up. Try joining pins 2 and 3 and the fan should kick in at 2nd speed, if it does the wiring's fine and the temp sensor has gone.

If you join pins 1 and 3 you get 3rd speed, ie max speed otherwise referred to as OMG speed

The sensor in the radiator has two parts, one controls 2nd speed, the other 3rd speed which is also full speed.

My fan does not kick in when the AC is switched on.

My AC does not work anyway, dont know if it needs re-gasing or if theres another problem with it.

I'm not bothered about the AC, just want the fan to kick in before the OMG speed as you mention lol.

I will check the temp sensor as you have mentioned.

Does the resistor pack control the 2nd speed fan? Im wondering whether the resistor pack i fitted is faulty.

                        Thanks

The resistor pack controls both the 1st speed fan - if your A/C was working and the 2nd speed fan. It's not used for the 3rd speed fan.

Something else to check is the relay for the 2nd speed fan. It's the bottom right "214" relay in the main fusebox, confusingly labeled 1st speed fan relay on the top of the fusebox. Substitute another 214 relay or the horn relay temporarily to see if 2nd speed now works.

Just checked by joining pins 2 & 3 on the connector for the temp sensor.

The relay clicks but the 2nd speed fan doesnt kick in.

Swapped relays over to make sure and it still didnt kick in.

Turned AC on, the relay for the AC also kicks in.

Does that mean the resistor pack i replaced is faulty?

Is there a way of checking? Reading resistance?

                            Thanks for your help.

You can check the resistor pack by checking the resistance between the terminals. It's a very low resistance so most meters will see the resistance as zero or close too it but that's fine because your problem looks like there's high resistance, ie a broken wire or resistor pack.
