    Ring gapping tool

Thinking of getting one of these type of ring gapping tools. Has anyone got one or have any experience of them? Are they any good?

I have been using mine for over 40 years, starting will my air cooled cars. Works real well.
I found that after honing a cylinder, that the rings were real close to max gap. I would buy a set of the oversize top and second rings and then file them down to the minimum gap. That way my rebuild would last longer.

I would put the ring in the cylinder, insert the ring less piston upside down to make sure the ring was square in the bore, and then feeler gauge the gap. I would file down a little at a time and check gap often.

This is also a good way to check how even the bore is on a cylinder. Put in the ring at various places on the bore and check the end gap.

I looked into getting one, but the S2 had used enough money already and i probably wouldn't use it again for a long time.

From what i understood the the ring material removed must be by filing from outside to the centre. And make sure the ring ends are square to each other like this ||

      So i bodged(?) this together.

Aslong as the file seat in the wood is a good fit.
