Part of the issue I have is that I don't have a garage, so I want to get everything ready to swap over in as short a time as possible, as leaving the car without an engine isn't really an option at the moment. Even if a spare engine is only in there for a year, it keeps the car on the road and means that I can take my time with the rest of the kit.

I can see where you are coming from, for me the ability to build another engine was crucial as the car is a daily driver. Need as little downtime as possible when it comes to swapping it out.

Question is should you bother fitting the 2nd engine, or just get stuck into rebuilding it? If investing money into an engine rebuild i would want to start with the one in the best condition.

I realize i have just made a compelling reason to buy another engine, tear it apart and bin most of it. And i'm the guy with a smokey S2, box's full of new engine bits, and broke. Maybe you shouldn't take my advice
