Bought myself a 2001 A4 1,8T quattro avant today. Loveley car, BUT on the way home, i discovered that the heating was quite bad... Especially at low speed/RPMs.. Now, i am thinking it might be the waterpump, no leaks inside, no smell no wet floor. Temp gauge seems normal at 90 deg. What else do you guys think it might be?
possible it has the old pump with plastic impeller and a few fins are missing.
i would expect it to over heat when stationary though. the 1.8t does generate a fair bit of heat.
my other thought would be to plug it into vcds and check air con etc.
Firstly you can try to see if you have a flow on the smaller diameter hose of the reservoir. And this with the engine ruining am 80-90 degrees . IF you have flow so you shoul go further and change the heater matrix. Is simpler than on an Audi 80 B3 B4 and A4 B5 because you can remove the pipes that enter in the heating matrix.
Hope that helps !
Audi S4 2.2T 5 spd 1992 for parts
AUDI A4 1.9TDI daily use
The ting is, even on a B5 it is a proper dash out job. And i would rather do it on a 80 than on this piece of s*#it... I´ll check flow and so in hose before doing anything else.
I have read on how to change heater core... Nothing iwsh on my worse enemy. I have flow to to the fill pot for coolant when car is hot and at 2500RPM,s anyway so pump should be working. Next is to try and flush/backfush heater core with radiator cleaner and then bleed system.
I have recently had a similar issue with my 2001 1.8t A4 ( b6 ).AVJ engine code.
After initially thinking the water pump was on its'way out, I replaced the water pump and fitted a cam belt kit, no change.
Flushed out the heater matrix , which was clear , no change.
This engine has an electronically controlled thermostat, replaced with new genuine part, £66 plus vat, no change
After a lot of research I worked out that the thermostat is controlled by the ecu which takes its' information from the coolant temperature sensor situated at the rear end of the cylinder head.
Changed the sensor with genuine Audi part, bled system, all good and has been for about a month or so.
The one difference being that my temperature gauge was only reaching 70c, because the thermostat was not opening/closing correctly
I appreciate that you may not have the AVJ with electronic thermostat, but if you do , good luck.
Could have air in system, but when I worked on my car, it was bled correctly each time, this is why I put forward my post, just in case the op has a similar issue with an unreliable thermostat control
So here goes. Took both hoses off the matrix/core. Flushed through with clean water. Then we poured some kaustik soda (don´t know the english word for it even if I am English :/) in one hose, then flushed throug again and repeated that a few times. Got a few blobs of gunk out... Then put it back together again, bled it a bit and viola! Heating is now fully functional! Glad it was an easy fix, as the seller was a proper ****! Now next problem. The car is destroyed on the inside from a magic tree/ air "freshener" and absolutley STINKS! Any one got any tips on how to get the horrid stench out?
Use a tray and put some freshly grinded coffee and out it in your car . Yo cand do that when you don't use the car. It will collect all that smell.
I have heard that from a few people now, luckily i live right by a shop that almost dosent do anything else than grind coffe and sell tea =) Will it go away for good, or will i need to use it all the time?
